Development of Photography and the Truth Behind Digital Photography
Jan 23rd 2012, 17:18

Photography is the art of drawing with the medium of light. In today’s photography scene, a lot of advances have made photography a hobby and a profession for many. If we take a look back at the beginnings of photography, one will be amazed by how many progressions it did. Before the flashy 10 frames per second feature of digital SLRs today, there came a time that bringing a camera for a photo shoot is already an effort because of its size. But during that time, it has been shown that even with a bulky camera, it could suffice the requirement of producing art. Hansel Adams proved his point by creating the images of the wild west. With the right adjustment of shutter speed to a very minute f stop 32, he produced magnificent photographs of varying subjects. Then, camera manufacturers turned to their engineering department to make the cameras a little bit more handy than the usual. Then, though still loaded with film, specifically the medium format film more known as the 120 films; TLRs made its way to the market in order to provide people with photographs with a handy frame. But the dilemma with 120 films is that they create good portraits and photographs for that matter but if we come to think of it, 120 formats only come with 12 or 16 shots, something that displeases camera enthusiasts. Then came the 35mm format film cameras in order to solve the problem of lacking in shots. A roll of 135 film can be bought with a 12, 24 or 36 shot option. First came the rangefinders. Rangefinders unlike the SLR, functions without a mirror that simultaneously lifts to let light register to the film. A rangefinder directly focuses on an object via a double image provided in the eyepiece. Then came the SLR. SLR camera is more user friendly compared to its predecessor, the rangefinder. An SLR makes it possible for someone to create images in the easiest way there is. Today, everything has turned digital. Who would have thought that making photographs nowadays is actually as good as painting. Today, with the entry of digital SLRs, they make it a point that the post processing phase do the job in ironing out the lack in skill of a photographer. It is a fact that film based photography could make way better photographs made by digital photographers. A film could be bloated to whichever size a photographer wants it to be. Unlike digital format where boundaries of pixels prevent its expansion; film doesn’t experience this kind of problem. With the entry of digital photography, it makes photography not an art anymore but a gauge to how good a software could be in blurring lack of skill and talent.

Dog Intelligence
Jan 23rd 2012, 17:25

Did you know that the intelligence of dogs can be compared to a two year old child? It has been found that they can understand about 165 words and gestures. Super intelligent one, called “super dogs”, can understand roughly 250 words – the same level of intelligence as a two and a half year old child. Researchers have found, surprisingly, that the canine can even understand simple math. They seem to have a sense of fairness. For example, if two were being evaluated and only one received a treat for performing a task, the other one lost interest. However, if one dog was fed a superior treat, both stayed engaged. According to experts in the field, the smartest canines are border collies and poodles. Though all dogs vary in intelligence, specialists believe that their social consciousness, however, is as high as an adolescent or even a teenager. In particular, they are very interested in “who is moving up in the pack and who is sleeping with whom”. As for training, whether or not the doggie co-operates well with humans depends on the demands and tasks for which the breed was created and whether independence or teamwork between dogs and people was required. Dogs with the will to please are easier to train because they are very easily motivated. However, with afghans who were bred to hunt, while they may not be motivated with toys or treats, with the help of a dog trainer who knows this breed, even these dogs can learn basic commands.

3 Easy to Use Positive Dog Training Tips that Get Results
Jan 23rd 2012, 17:12

The following three tips are based on positive reinforcement methods that are proven and time tested to get results. Let’s get started… Tip #1: Consistency is Critical Dogs learn through repetition and consistency. If you consistently reinforce a behavior with praise, food or another reward the dog will start to offer the behavior more often as a result. This also applies to inappropriate behavior like jumping or chewing on your favorite pair of shoes. Jumping is an attention getting behavior. 99.9% of the time dogs jump to get attention. What happens when your dog jumps on you? You push them off or you pet them or you say, “No!” in a stern voice. In every case you are giving them attention. Either positive (petting) or negative (pushing them off and saying NO!). What kind of attention does not matter to your dog. They are getting attention either way and they are being rewarded. If you push your dog off of you every time they jump you are consistently rewarding the behavior. As a result your dog will jump more often because they are receiving a reward. On the flip side of this coin if you praise your dog every time they greet you by sitting your dog will start to greet you by sitting more often. This applies to any behavior you want to teach from lying down to coming when called. If you are consistent they will offer the behavior more often and they will learn what does and does not earn a reward. Tip #2: Keep Your Emotions Out of the Process If you have ever seen a dog trainer work you probably have seen what I refer to as the “he won’t listen” game. The game is common amongst my dog training clients and it goes like this… My dog won’t listen! I have tried and tried to teach him how to come to me when I call him but he simply won’t listen! At this point I step in and without saying a word I get the dog to come to me eagerly. This is the first time I have ever seen or met this dog and he comes to me like we are old mates. Why? Because I do not allow any emotion to hinder me. I am not happy, I am not angry, I am not sad, I am not nervous, or afraid. I am neutral and along with a little body language the dog comes to me because he wants to.. If you are mad, sad, overly excited, frustrated or nervous your dog feels this. She reads you like a book and your attitude conveys the message, “stay away” to the dog. She reads this language and avoids you. As a result you become even more frustrated and you start to try even harder to get her to comply making the situation a lose-lose-lose for all involved. When you start training your dog to do something approach it with a care-free attitude. Patience is the key when teaching your dog to do something. Remain patient and relaxed. Work in small bites and keep the lessons short and to the point. End on a happy successful note and your dog will become more reliable as a result. Tip #3: Mark successful behaviors with a sound (clicker) or word like “Yes” In order for your dog to understand they did something right you must mark the successful behavior immediately with a distinct sound or a word. I use a clicker or the word, “yes” to indicate a success. For example, if you ask your dog to “sit” and he does you want to mark it the moment he does it successfully with a clicker or by saying yes. Then follow that up with a treat, praise, a good scratch behind the ear or whatever your dog finds rewarding. What you are doing is telling the dog, “Yes, that is exactly what I want. Great job!” but not in so many words. When you mark a behavior successfully your dog will understand what they did right making the training process much smoother. By using positive dog training methods you decrease the odds you will make a mistake and hurt the training process and you increase the chances your dog will actually learn something.

Alpha Hawaii
Kalapana, Hawaii – From the Fires of Hades to the Eden of Rebirth
Jan 23rd 2012, 17:51

On the southeast coast of the Big Island of Hawaii runs the Kapoho-Kalapana Highway, perhaps the only road in the world named for two cities that have been buried by volcanic eruptions. Before the destruction of these towns, this area harbored some of the last refuges of the native Hawaiian way of life–it was a safe haven from the ravages, temptations and noisome encroachments of western civilization. Here were villages of Hawaiians, living as they have for hundreds of years, fishing, farming and keeping their culture, their way of life, their people, alive and vital.

But life on an active volcano is uncertain. Life on an island with 3 active volcanoes, as Hawaii has, is perilous. And for this particular corner of Hawaiian paradise, Madame Pele, the Goddess of the Volcano, began to have other ideas.

In 1990 Pele determined it was time for some serious geographical reorganization. Lava flows from Kilauea’s East Rift swarmed down the mountain and engulfed the villages of Royal Gardens, Kaimu and Kalapana, destroying virtually everything. Immolated and buried were centuries-old fishing villages and a world famous black sand beach. The road ends today where Kaimu Black Sand Beach once stood, and is now a thousand yards and more inland.

When the lava came, it wiped out not just homes, gardens, crops and material things, it wiped out a way of life and a landscape cherished by generations. Imagine the staggering losses to the community. The coconut grove by the beach where, for a thousand years, the Kahunas had blessed the fishing canoes, was not only wiped away and covered with lava, but the landscape was altered so permanently and completely that none are even sure where it used to be. The spots where generations of fathers taught their sons to fish, gone. The groves where mothers sat with their daughters passing on the arts of weaving along with the family stories, gone. The beach where thousands of young lovers had walked by the moonlit surf, arm in arm, for centuries, and where perhaps not a few babies had also been made, gone beneath 50 feet and more of lava. Everything gone; a landscape, a way of life, an entire culture.

It was from her vision of strength and a refusal to let her community die, rather than feelings of loss and desolation, that inspired one local resident to replant and reestablish the area. Not to just replant her land, but the entire village. Inspired, tirelessly, steadily, she worked planting hundreds, then thousands, of sprouted coconut and other palms and encouraging others in her community to join in. Even when she discovered she had a terminal disease, she selflessly redoubled her efforts, continuing her campaign to replant and recover, the community pitching in even more after she passed away.

Today there are literally thousands of young trees growing on the no-longer barren lava, and a new geography for new lives and new memories is being born. Her vision of rebirth, now being realized, is a moving testament to the power of love of ones’ community and commitment to ones’ culture. This living vision of young palm trees is an amazing, enduring monument to her optimism, faith and perseverance, and to that of her community. One of the truly most moving stories in the Islands, this place has to be seen to be appreciated.

When you visit Kalapana today, the devastation of 20 years ago is still obvious, but so is the vision of rebirth. Although none are yet as tall as a man, the rebuilt trail to the new black sand beach, Kaimu Beach, is delineated with the young palms. You should take time to wander out to the beach, over the acres of new land, and look back at where the village of Kalapana once stood. Near the parking area along the path are fossils, lava casts, of palm trees, coconuts, pandanas fruit and other plants…keep a sharp eye out, they are everywhere. Swimming is hazardous at the new beach, so is surfing, the ocean currents being strong and treacherous. But take some time to relax, wade, feel the sand beneath your feet and amidst the lunar desolation of the fresh lava flows, contemplate the drive of one dying woman to rebuild a world she loved from a devastation few of us can imagine.

From the lava hillocks along the trail you can get nice views of the eruption plume at Pu’u O’o, up on the flank of Kilauea as well as the steam clouds down a few miles along the coast where the lave enters the sea at Waikupanaha. This is one of the few places where both can be seen easily and at the same time.

Back at the parking area at the road’s end, look a bit farther to the west and find Uncle Robert’s House, one that was spared the destruction, where a display of photos of the lava flows and the village in pre-disaster times in a miniature museum can be found, along with an interesting nature trail. The stop is worth your time, and be sure to leave a donation in the offering jar.

The extreme devastation suffered by the people of Kalapana may be a long way from our own life experiences, but we should take inspiration and example from their vision, their optimistic perseverence and their deep love of, and commitment to, their way of life.

Backwater Fishing Hotspots
Jan 23rd 2012, 01:11

If you like to fish and Florida, you can enjoy both while backwater fishing in many areas of the state. Where you decide to go depends on the type of fishing you are after and the type of fish you wish to catch. For those that want the visual pleasure of seeing a silver tarpon fishtail across the water when hooked on their line, then the Naples, Florida, area is the perfect fishing venue. If you are a bass fisherman, then the lakes in the middle of the state and the mysterious Everglades are the places to visit. The Intercoastal Waterway allows easy access to many different fishing experiences. This waterway connects to canals, streams, and creeks, which empty into this water passage adjacent to Jacksonville. The variety of fish that can be caught here depends on the time of the year, the weather, and your preference. Gator trout, Seatrout, Snook, and red and blues can be caught in profusion. It all depends on what you want from your fishing. Wintertime fishing in the middle of the state and north lends itself to excellent crappie fishing. The angler that gets into a school of crappie will wear out their fishing addiction in no time at all. In addition to being fun to catch, they are great eating when cooked after being freshly caught. Use light tackle to make it more fun. Fishing with the help of a guide, no matter what type of fish you’re after, will almost guarantee a successful fishing trip. Florida fishing guides are local, knowledgeable, and will supply all that is needed for a successful fishing venture. They are extremely useful when trying the Everglades out or when flat fishing in the shallow coastal waters. Another fun and usually reliable fishing trip is going after snappers in the mangrove islands. Snappers love the mangrove habitat. Fishing for snappers is not only very enjoyable, but they are delicious when freshly pan fried. South Florida offers thousands of square miles of mangrove islands for the snapper enthusiasts.. Each of the four seasons offers different fishing experiences for the Florida visitor. The most popular are fall, winter, and spring. The summer fishing, while decent, is not to the liking of those who do not like sultry weather. Florida summers are sultry, as you must remember you are in the tropics. Florida fishing makes even the amateur look like a pro. The fish are there to be caught.

Jan 23rd 2012, 06:56

Some people think training puppies is difficult. How you approach your training and handling of the puppy will make a world of difference. The following tips will help make training your puppy easier and more fun as well. Training Tip #1 – Always keep an eye on your puppy. If you supervise your puppy he or she can’t use the bathroom in the house, they can’t chew things up, and you can be there to take them out when they need to go. If you can not supervise your puppy investing in a quality dog kennel is suggested. Training Tip #2 – Let your puppy drag a leash. Buy a 5-6 foot nylon web leash and let your puppy drag it around. This way you can stand on the leash to keep your puppy around you. Tether the puppy to a chair or door so you can supervise them while you are busy. Training Tip #3 – Handle them. Touch their paws, rub their ears, check their teeth, pick them up and check their belly, touch their hind end. These will get them used to being examined by the vet, handled by the groomer, by children and adults. Training Tip #4 – Socialize your puppy. Early socialization is critical for proper development of your puppy. If you do not get them out in the world they will never learn how to behave in the world. My rule of thumb is to take them every I possibly can between 8-14 weeks and I continue this socialization until maturity. For younger pups consult your vet for safety precautions. Usually you can start socializing your pups with other dogs after they have started their second set of shots. Again, check with your vet before you do this. Training Tip #5 – Use motivation to teach basic things like sit, down and roll over. Teaching your puppy to sit, lie down and roll over are great ways to begin formal obedience training with your puppy. Rolling over and laying down are also submissive positions that will help your pup learn how to remain calm and see you as the leader as they mature. With the use of positive reinforcement and motivational techniques you can work with almost any age and see results. Training Tip #6 – Use hand signals. Along with verbal cues you want to use hand signals. This will help your puppy understand what you want them to do. Dogs are masters at reading body language. It makes sense to use it early on to start teaching your puppy behaviors. Training Tip #7 – Avoid rolling your puppy on their back or practicing “alpha rolls.” One popular concept today is leadership. Many people mistake leadership with dominance. Dominance and leadership or not the same thing and practicing dominant handling techniques like the Alpha Roll is not in you or your pups best interest. Instead, lay them on their side and teach them to relax on cue. This will help you in the long run establish yourself as the leader and teach them how to remain calm under stressful situations like the vets office, the groomer, and in situations that cause your puppy stress. In Conclusion Socialize your puppy as often as you can and start to touch them alot to help with handling and stressful situations they are going to encounter on a daily basis. By taking the time to properly work with your puppy you will save yourself a lot of frustration as they grow older.

Infosites Yeast Infection
The Causes of Yeast Infections
Jan 23rd 2012, 07:30

Just as there are several varieties of yeast infections, so are there several causes of yeast infection. Some causes are obvious and some harder to understand. However, most anyone who has had a yeast infection will want to know why. When men have a penile yeast infection, there is usually only one cause. They have had unprotected sex with a partner who has a vaginal infection. Long-term partners may sometimes pass yeast infections back and forth almost indefinitely unless both are treated at the same time. For women with vaginal infections, there are a multitude of causes of yeast infections. Some have to do with the acidity of the vagina and vaginal area. If the acidity in the vagina is too low, yeast will take hold and grow beyond a healthy level and cause an infection. Many things effect vaginal acidity. Some of these things are naturally thought of as part of the function of the vagina itself. They include menstruation and pregnancy. Some have to do with unusual strains on the body such as stress, sickness, or lack of sleep. Medications like birth control pills, steroids, and especially antibiotics can have an effect. If a person has an HIV infection, yeast infection is just another they will have trouble fighting off. Uncontrolled diabetes can also change the acidity of the vagina. Any of these problems can be some of the causes of yeast infection. Babies often acquire yeast infections during birth. As they go through the birth canal they may pick up yeast bacteria from their mother. If this does not happen, they may soon end up with a yeast infection from contact with family members. Babies’ immune systems are not fully developed, so this becomes a more serious problem for them than it would for others. The causes of vaginal infection in older babies and toddlers often have to do with the warm, moist environment that is favored by yeast infections. Diapers give these infections an ideal setting in which to thrive. These children can also get thrush, a yeast infection of the mouth, and it can travel through the digestive system to the diaper area. Thrush is often caused by the use of antibiotics and may be further fostered by practices such as thumb sucking. The only thing that can be done in any of these instances besides treatment after the fact is to use good diaper-changing habits and try to discourage thumb sucking. So, what are the causes of vaginal infection? They are different depending on who has the yeast infection and on what environmental factors he or she was exposed to. The important thing is to identify the source to try to prevent future occurrences

A Call to Ban Copper Sulfate (an Algaecide) For Use in America’s Waters
Jan 23rd 2012, 09:48

Protecting National Water Resources The purpose of this paper is to recommend a prohibition of the use of copper sulfate, a toxic and bioaccumulative chemical, in America’s waters. Background Copper sulfate, a naturally occurring inorganic salt, is an algaecide, herbicide, germicide, and fungicide and is commonly used to maintain the aesthetic appearance of lakes, reservoirs, and ponds. Being a trace element, its poisonous effects can be detected at levels as low as .33ppm, and its toxic potency is inversely related to the alkalinity and pH of water. The compound is typically applied on a bi-weekly schedule, and what does not flow out of a water body into a receiving stream ends up binding to the underlying sediment. Here, this heavy metal accumulates indefinitely, serving as a reservoir of toxicity until the sediment is disturbed and conditions favor its release into the environment. Because of its highly caustic nature, copper sulfate has been classified by the EPA as being in toxicity class I – highly toxic – and requires the signal words “DANGER – POISON” on its container. Having the direct potential to disrupt photosynthesis, and because of its toxicity to downstream endangered species, its use requires a permit in certain jurisdictions and applications. Copper sulfate’s toxicity and propensity for accumulation is leading to a burgeoning problem at sites located throughout the US and the world. Copper pollution is beginning to affect many coastal regions where river and storm water systems discharge; sites experiencing hazardously elevated levels of copper include: Delaware Bay, Chesapeake Bay, Naples Bay, North Miami, and Lake Pontchartrain. In some cases, “[copper sulfate]…is the largest contributor to copper contamination.” As the effects of copper compounds and their persistence in coastal areas become better understood, some municipalities have included in their water resource management plans measures to reduce copper levels in stormwater discharge. The application of copper sulfate as an algaecide has also been questioned in New York City, where authorities identified it as the primary cause of excessive copper levels in the City’s wastewaters and harbor. However, in some cases, the specific regulatory approaches adopted have been criticized for their inefficiency. San Francisco’s initiative to control copper contamination is estimated to have an end cost in excess of one billion dollars, primarily because of its inclusion of metallic copper, as well as all copper compounds, whatever their toxicity or fate. Recent initiatives are taking a new direction, which is to improve upon water resources by targeting only volatile forms of copper, including copper sulfate. Detrimental to National Waters Damaging Natural Habitats The deleterious effects of this compound on natural habitats have been widely documented. Long-term case studies have shown that, while algae is temporarily killed as intended, its decaying matter contributes heavily to dissolved oxygen depletion, fish kills, and the accelerated recycling of phosphorus which promotes algal blooms. Eventually, the natural balance of the water body is upset: phytoplankton, the base of the food chain, are greatly reduced and no longer support small aquatic life; sediment-dwelling insects are killed by the accumulating poison; and plants, serving as both fish food and habitat, are killed by copper sulfate’s photosynthesis disruption. After a local pond’s ecosystem has been become debilitated, the highly water-soluble residual algaecide is flushed downstream during a rain event, becoming a hazard for downstream organisms. Catfish, one of the Fox River’s prime game fish, are visibly stressed by concentrations as low as 1.7ppm. Enzyme activity in other fish increases due to stress at 2ppm, and the negative effects suffered were still observable after two weeks in clean water. Furthermore, even at suggested application rates, the algaecide has been found to be lethal to salmonoids (e.g. salmon, trout, etc.). Animals that ingest copper sulfate by drinking from contaminated water bodies are also at risk as chronic exposures have lead to problems at levels as low as 20ppm per day-commonly leading to malfunction of the endocrine gland and testes. After consumed, copper sulfate is strongly bioaccumulated, primarily in the heart, liver, brain, kidneys, and muscles of animals. Detrimental to Water Quality As a treatment strategy, the use of copper sulfate as an algaecide addresses only the symptoms of the water body’s degraded condition, not the causes. The underlying cause of the algal blooms is the urban runoff of fertilizers, detergents, and other phosphates. The use of copper sulfate does nothing to minimize or manage these nutrients. In fact, as a germicide, it destroys the beneficial bacteria that would naturally break down nutrients and, as an herbicide, kills plant life that would absorb them. When this water is released into receiving streams, it brings with it the burden of excess nutrients and very low dissolved oxygen. Considering that nutrient overabundance is already problematic for many U.S. rivers and streams, any effort to lessen the problem should be taken. This is especially important to downstream communities that already assume additional treatment costs to make water safe and potable for their residents. Contributing to Pollution Pollutants are defined as chemical constituents present at toxic levels and in bioavailable forms for a sufficient period that they adversely affect the beneficial uses of a water body. Copper and its compounds are designated as pollutants, however it is the free form of the copper II ion that is biologically available and the most toxic form of this substance. It is therefore important in creating a control approach to differentiate between sources such as metallic copper from brake pads and liners, and a wide array of ionic forms of copper of varying degrees of potential toxicity, the most problematic of which is copper sulfate. Thus, environmental scientists continue to emphasize the importance of focusing “pollutant control on those chemical constituents that are significantly impairing…waterbody(s) within and downstream of the watershed.” Residents add copper sulfate to water bodies to satisfy an aesthetic desire, often without considering its potentially harmful effects. This is especially true for storm detention ponds, which are increasingly seen as amenities and not as serving a specific, environmental function. No longer should copper sulfate be permitted at the detriment of the local and downstream environments. An opportunity to remove an unnecessary, biologically available toxin from your local water bodies presents itself without significant drawbacks-and because of this, use of the copper sulfate pollutant should be forbidden. On the Environmental Frontier In considering a ban on copper sulfate, your community would not be unprecedented. A number of jurisdictions are, or have, considered a ban on the use of copper sulfate. Based on data revealing that copper “hot spots” coincide with storm water discharge points in the bay, the Naples City Council will consider a resolution in November 2008 that would prohibit the use of copper sulfate as an algaecide. In early 2008, the City amended its budget, approving the installation of aerators in its stormwater retention ponds and lakes, in place of algaecide use to control algal blooms.. Across the ocean from Naples, the European Union had scheduled a complete ban on all copper based algaecides because of the “effects of its use on the aquatic environment, impact on aquatic organisms, and soil accumulation.” Reviewers found copper sulfate “not compatible with sustainable ecosystems and recommended against its use,” expressing concern about the impact it has when flushed into natural water bodies. For these reasons, the review panel concluded that copper sulfate “should never be considered as a routine and convenient treatment to handle [algal] problems.” A Call to Action As copper pollution becomes more widely recognized, more jurisdictions will move toward legislative and regulatory prohibitions targeting copper and its compounds. Your local community has the opportunity to protect its ecosystems and preserve its vital water resources by preventing the intentional application of copper sulfate, a toxin and pollutant, to its waters. By limiting this ban to copper sulfate as an algaecide, rather than more broadly to other copper species, smaller municipalities will be able to apply limited resources in the most beneficial and cost-effective manner. Contact Municipal boards and present to them this information; inform pondowners and Homeowners Associations of the dangers of copper sulfate use; lobby your local governing body to institute a city or county wide ban on this toxic chemical– for it is only through education, understanding, and action that we can protect our Nation’s waters.

Cooking With Tea – Some Tips and Tricks
Jan 23rd 2012, 12:45

Tea is a popular ingredient to cook with in some cuisines but completely unknown about in others. Most of us are familiar with using tea as a drink but what about using it to cook with? Tea is diverse and comes in many sweet and tart flavors. Some teas are delicate and aromatic, and others are full-bodied and robust.

Whether you have loose tea or teabags you can use these in recipes and top chefs around the world are using tea to flavor their recipes in gourmet restaurants. Tea adds flavor, aroma, and texture to recipes. It can be baked in bread, used to make tenderizing marinades for steak, used to flavor ice cream and candy, boiled with rice or eggs and more.

Using Tea as a Cooking Liquid

When you are making soup or boiling rice, try using tea instead of your usual stock or water. This might sound strange but the tea flavor will give your dish an exotic Asian flavor.

Steep your tealeaves in water for five minutes to make the tea. Do not steep them for much longer than that, else the tea will become bitter rather than stronger. Gradually add small amounts of tea to your dishes. It might take a few attempts to get good results, rather like becoming familiar with a new herb or spice.

Using Tea as a Spice

Combine ground tealeaves with ginger, honey, pepper, or lemon pepper to add a spicy, sweet flavor to your recipes. You can also use tea as a base for marinades and sauces.

You can grind your tealeaves in a spice grinder or pepper mill. Grind oolong tealeaves with white pepper to make a tasty meat rub. Green tea leaves can be ground with salt and added to steamed vegetables or Asian recipes. You can experiment with different teas because each one tastes a bit different.

Other Uses for Tea

You might like to make concentrated tea for making steak marinade recipes and chicken marinades. Steep a teabag in quarter of a cup of water for five minutes, then remove the bag and use the tea in your easy steak marinade recipe rather than water. The tannins in tea help to tenderize beef. If you are marinating fish, try using white tea rather than green or black tea, because it has a more delicate flavor.

You can also use tea to make a stir-fry or cook noodles or rice. If the flavor is too strong, use part tea and part water. Tea can be used to make sweet recipes too, like cookies, cakes, chai tea ice cream, and muffins. Tea retains its antioxidants and natural oils in cooking, making it a healthy ingredient.

The next time you are grilling, toss some tea on the grill. Sprinkle the leaves in broccoli, spinach or other cooking vegetables or use them in a salad. Use the leaves to make herbal cooking sachets for casseroles, stews, or soups. You can be as creative as you like with this wonderful ingredient. Its flavor complements most Asian recipes, as well as many fruit and vegetable dishes.

French Recipes – Three Easy Chicken Recipes
Jan 22nd 2012, 13:23

Here are three classic chicken recipes from different regions of France. They employ three different cooking methods: poaching, grilling and pan-frying. I have simplified them for the amateur home cook. All three are quick and easy, with no fiddly techniques and no complicated sauces. And they all taste great! So why not treat your friends and family – and yourself?

For all the recipes, try to find a free-range, farm-reared, preferably organic chicken. If you can’t, buy the best you can afford.

1: Chicken in a Pot

This is my version of the famous Poule au Pot. A nice, plump chicken weighing about 2.5kg should feed four people very easily.

Peel and slice 2 onions. Peel and slice 6 carrots. Wash and slice three leeks. Chop up a couple of celery sticks.

Put the chicken and the prepared vegetables into a large saucepan. (Remember to remove the plastic bag containing the giblets, if there is one!). Cover the chicken with cold water. Add some salt and pepper, and throw in a handful of chopped fresh tarragon or parsley. Bring to the boil, then lower the heat and simmer gently for about 2 hours, skimming off any scum that rises to the surface of the water.

Take the chicken out of the poaching liquid and carve it or just chop it into pieces. Check the seasoning. Serve the chicken surrounded by the cooked vegetables, with some of the broth poured over.

Some new potatoes would be nice, too. How easy is that?

2: Chicken Breasts with Calvados

Take 4 large-ish chicken breasts. Season them well with salt, freshly-ground black pepper and a little dried tarragon. Peel and slice 2 shallots. Peel and slice 500g button mushrooms.

Heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a large frying-pan. When the oil is moderately hot, throw in a large knob of butter. Add the chicken breasts and brown lightly on both sides in the oil and butter. Take the chicken out of the pan and set to one side. Add the sliced shallots to the oil and butter remaining in the pan and cook over a moderate heat for 3 minutes. Add the sliced mushrooms. Cook the shallots and mushrooms until they are just beginning to brown. Put the chicken back in the pan. Cook everything together for 10-12 minutes, depending on the size and thickness of the chicken breasts. Try not to overcook them.

Pour over 3 tablespoons of Calvados. If you haven’t got any Calvados, use brandy or whisky. Boil rapidly for a couple of minutes to cook away the harshness of the alcohol, leaving only the flavour. If you want to be really flash, you can set it alight – but be careful not to singe your eyebrows! Now add about 200ml double cream. Bring the mixture to the boil, then lower the heat and simmer for a few minutes until the sauce is reduced and starting to thicken. Check the seasoning. If you like, add a couple of squeezes of lemon juice to cut the richness. At the last moment throw in a small handful of chopped fresh parsley or tarragon.

Serve with plain boiled rice or pasta.

3: Chicken Grilled with Garlic, Lemon & Herbs

Cut a large chicken into pieces (or, if you prefer, buy 8 oven-ready chicken joints). Mix together 2 tablespoons of olive oil, the juice of a lemon, 2 peeled and crushed cloves of garlic, a small handful of fresh tarragon and some salt and pepper. Rub this mixture into all sides of the pieces of chicken. If possible, leave the chicken to stand for an hour or so.

Heat the grill to its highest setting. Lay the prepared chicken joints in one layer in a large shallow roasting tin or grill pan. Put the pan under the grill. Cook for about 10 minutes. Keep your eye on it. You want the chicken to turn brown and crisp, perhaps even starting to scorch a little here and there – but don’t let it burn. Turn the pieces over and cook the other sides for a further 5 – 6 minutes.

Remove from the grill. Dot with more butter and some roughly chopped fresh parsley or tarragon. Serve a once with some saut

Belly Button Ring Basics – How to Care for a New Navel Piercing
Jan 22nd 2012, 13:40

You took the plunge, bit your lip, and braced your self for the pain. Moments later you had a shiny new piece of jewelry making sparkling from your navel. You’ve pierced your belly button and now you’re ready to get on with your life and show it off at the club or pool side. Unfortunately there is one one problem. It’s red, it hurts, and it’s kind of swollen. It’s not quite ready for it’s debut but don’t worry, it’s only a few days old. In order to make the most of your new piercing, it’s important to take care of it. Just follow these simple steps and you’ll look sexy in no time showing off your new belly bling. New Navel Piercing Care: Keep it clean: It’s important to keep any piercings clean and there no exception when it comes to belly buttons. Your belly button, though often covered by clothing, can still collect bacteria. Clean your belly button piercing twice daily to keep it bacteria free. Be sure to use an antibacterial soap to rid the area of any harmful germs that can cause infection. While cleaning twice daily is a good rule of thumb, you may find that your life style requires a little more cleaning. If you take part in any of the following activities or activities similar to, be sure to clean your piercing when you are finished: Spending time in a hot tub or pool Working Out Participating in sexual activities Participating in labor intensive activities. Handsome Working in a Kitchen

Use a Sea Salt Soak: The healing process for a belly button ring can be extremely long (6 to 12 months), but you can help speed up the healing process by soaking the area in a mixture of sea salts and distilled water. You can buy the pre-made soaks that are offered at many piercing shops or you can make your own in a pinch using sea salt and distilled water. Use this soak 3 to 4 times daily for about 5 to 10 minutes. Keep this up until the piercing is healed. (Note: Professional piercers suggest using a mixture of sea salt and water that is close to that of your body’s. Get a gallon jug of water and add sea salt until you are able to taste it. Add little by little until the taste of salt is apparent. Remember to keep track of how much salt you are adding so you can prepare the mix again if needed.) Try Not to Touch: It’s new and exciting and there is something inside you that draws you to touch your new navel piercing. Unfortunately, this is one urge that should go unsatisfied. The more you touch your piercing the more you will irritate it and the more likely you are to transfer harmful bacteria from your hands to your sensitive navel. If you do have to touch it, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly with an antibacterial soap. Ask an Expert: A little pain, discomfort, blood, and discharge is common with new piercings; however, if you’re experiencing any or all of those things in excess don’t hesitate to call or visit your piercer immediately. If you feel that something is not right it’s better to be safe than sorry.

4 Things to Avoid Never Use Rubbing Alcohol or Hydrogen Peroxide: When you look down and see a red or irritated piercing you may be tempted to run to the medicine cabinet for a solution. While rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide may work in other situations, when used on new piercing they can actually cause more harm than good. Both substances are harsh and can severely dry out your skin, prolong the healing time, or increase your risk of scaring. Never Use Medicinal Ointments to Speed Healing: A ointment like Neosporin is terrific for a cut or scrape, but when it comes to piercings it can be counterproductive. Your piercing needs oxygen to heal and these ointments create a protective barrier between your skin and the air. Without oxygen your healing will be slowed. Additionally, overtime, the petroleum based gel can prevent the sea salt soak from reaching your skin. Avoid Tight Clothing Around New Piercing: A new piercing is sensitive and a new belly button piercing is in a happens to be in a very bad spot when it comes to healing. Even though you love your tight fitting jeans and skirts, try to give your belly button room to breath. Clothes that are tight will cause friction. To much friction can cause a world of problems the least being increased healing time and the worst being infection and/or rejection of the piercing. Never Ignore a Problem: If you think there is a problem, address it immediately. Waiting will only have negative consequences including, full blown infection, scarring, and rejection or removal of the piercing.

So, it’s important that you plant all types of blooms to have your constant colors of different flowers in your garden. You should check your planting calendar to know what plants are best suited in each climate every month in your area. This is vital, so that you’ll not waste your time, efforts and money. Knowing these requirements, gives you some guide which type of flower plants are suited in each season of the year. Some basic guides you can follow what types of flowers fit in your area. Annual Flower Plants These type of flowers are productive only for a period of one year. They should be replanted after one year to have your continuous flower blooms. These types of flowers are ideal for mixing with perennials and bulb plants to give more colors while other flowers are not yet blooming. Annuals are also excellent as house plants in containers and hanging baskets. Perennial Flower Plants These types of flowers comes back every year. They have the tendency to become dormant in certain season and become active in the succeeding season. You don’t need to replant them anymore, just wait until they produce flowers again.. You need to choose perennial flowers according to their degree of tolerance from sunlight and those that thrives in shaded places. Arrange your perennials in a manner where tall ones are placed in a spot not to complete with the shorter plants. Bulb Types Flowers These are the types of flower plants from bulbs which usually undergoes dormancy period on winter season and rejuvenates each year to produce again some beautiful blooms. In your planting calendar, you can schedule your planting according to their flowering period to provide with a combination of flower colors in your garden. For your garden that needs flowers for all season, plant some of these bulbs that would produce blooms in succession all year round. Combining all these types in one area in your garden, could give you a constant flower blooms non-stop all throughout the seasons of the year. Happy gardening!

Alpha Bahamas
Coral Reefs and The Bahamas
Jan 22nd 2012, 14:24

Often known as the ‘Rainforests of the Sea’, coral reefs are home to some of the most diverse eco-systems on Earth, providing a home for a quarter of all marine species, including fish, molluscs, and sponges. Reefs themselves are formed of coral, colonies of tiny living animals found in marine waters containing low nutrients. The reef is built from stony corals, and formed by ‘polyps’ (a cylindrical form of life that gives the reef its distinctive colour and texture) that live in groups. The result, what you can see on a Bahamas dive, is some of the most beautiful natural scenery you’ll find anywhere on the planet. Formation Most coral reefs were formed after the last glacial period, when melting ice caused the sea level to rise; making many (including the ones in The Bahamas) less than 10,000 years old. Many of the reefs found in The Bahamas are barrier reefs, the name given to reefs that grow over the centuries to encircle a specific island. The reef circling the island of Andros is said to be the third largest such reef in the world – perfect to explore on a dive. Bahamas residents are rightly very proud of the reef, and the natural underwater world it has become a symbol of. Darwin’s Paradox Esteemed scientist Charles Darwin published his first monograph in 1842, entitled ‘The Structure and Distribution of Coral Reefs’. It was based on his observations during his famous voyage on the HMS Beagle, which led to his publication and renown as a writer. It also gave rise to ‘Darwin’s Paradox’. Darwin described tropical coral reefs as ‘oases in the desert of the ocean’. He reflected on the paradox that they flourished as diverse ecosystems while surrounded by ocean waters with hardly any nutrients. It is still a challenge for scientists today to explain this paradox, though anybody engaging in a Bahamas dive won’t need to worry – just enjoy the sights. The Reef’s Residents Coral reefs are home to a staggering array of animals, many of which can be seen on a dive; Bahamas reefs are home to fish, seabirds, sponges, worms, crustaceans (including shrimp, spiny lobsters, and crabs), molluscs, starfish, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, sea turtles, and even sea snakes. Groupers, a fish commonly associated with Bahamas fishing, also consider the coral reefs their home and can be seen weaving in and out of the coral. Conservation Ultimately, coral reefs are very susceptible to changes in their environment, and many are dying around the world. Activities such as coral mining, pollution, overfishing and blast fishing are serious threats to the stability of the delicately balanced systems of a coral reef. Though reefs also face threats from diseases, oceanic acidification, and algal blooms, The Bahamas are known for their system of reef management, so sites such as the reef around Andros will be preserved for all those wishing to dive. Bahamas reefs also play an important part in protecting the islands from natural disasters such as the large waves created by hurricanes.

Alpha Beef Recipes
Homemade Pot Pie – Recipe For Beef Pot Pie
Jan 22nd 2012, 17:45

This recipe for homemade beef pot pie is a good way to use leftover pot roast from Sunday dinner. The dropped biscuits can be made from scratch, or a box mix may be used.. Ingredients for Pot Pie 2 cups of leftover, fully-cooked roast beef, cut into small pieces 1 sweet onion, chopped 1 cup canned peas, drained 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 cup cooked potatoes, cut in chunks 1 cup cooked carrots, cut in chunks 1 jar of beef or au jus gravy Dropped biscuit dough, prepared (below) Instructions for Pot Pie Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Gently combine all ingredients, except the biscuit dough, in a large mixing bowl with a big spoon, such as a wooden spoon.. After adding the jar of gravy, fill it with a little water, put the lid back on, shake it up, and mix this in with the rest of the mixture. Pour the prepared mixture into a 13 by 9 inch cake pan. Drop the biscuits on top (see below) to cover the pot pie. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes, or until hot through and biscuits are done and nicely browned. Since everything is already cooked, this just has to heat through and blend the flavors. Dropped Biscuit Dough 2 cups flour 3 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon shortening Milk to make a stiff batter Put dry ingredients in a large bowl and mix together. Add the shortening and work through with tips of fingers or fork. Add milk, small amounts at a time, until you have a batter that can be dropped from a spoon without spreading. Drop by spoonfuls on top of the pot pie mixture.

Nessun Internet
Has The Internet Really Become Nothing More Than a Surveillance Tool?
Jan 22nd 2012, 20:39

“Every step you take, every move you make, I’ll be watching you,” goes the famous song from the Police. The Police is the name of the band, but maybe that is apropos in other ways? Go watch this on music video on YouTube and then let’s talk shall we? Now then, in many religions there is a God who is constantly watching over your every move, and one would suppose this concept has helped keep human societies in line. After all, “integrity is what you do when no one is watching,” right?

Now then in listening to that song, one could say that that the “police state” or Internet Surveillance is now that “entity” watching you, but it’s not anyone’s perceived religious god, rather it is “real” and it is pervasive and it includes all of your electronic toys – smart phone, computer, internet, and any electronic transactions you make.

And speaking of Christmas as it’s nearly upon us, why not replace Santa Clause with “IT” or information technology; “It knows when you are sleeping, it knows when you’re awake, it knows if you’ve been bad or good, so be good for goodness sake,” see that point. And really wasn’t that just a gimmick to get kids to behave if they want Christmas gifts, to submit to parental authority? In this case however, it is the state which wishes you to submit, or rather maybe the “crony capitalist” state, run by the power brokers and the powers that be.

Using this information to exploit consumers, and keep control of the masses – 7 billion planet-wide now we are told. Interestingly enough, I am pro-capitalist, self-made, and have no problem with the use of data for marketing purposes, heck, I’ve always collected data and used it in my own business, even before the Internet, gathering lists, and information where ever I could. Yes, there was a time when there wasn’t an Internet, cell phones, fax machines, etc, and it wasn’t that long ago my friends.
