Alpha Bahamas
Bahamas Offshore Banking
Jan 10th 2012, 16:36

The Bahamas is not just a great getaway for tourists. It has, for many years now, been a safe haven for businessmen and for their cash assets. Banks in the Bahamas have been touted as the world’s greatest tax haven for foreign accounts. The islands allow offshore incorporation of business entities and offshore banking for them; and all transactions are regulated and guaranteed by the International Laws on Offshore Banking.

But if you think having an offshore bank account in the Bahamas would mean frequent travels there, think again. While trips to the island paradise are always welcome treats (if not for the expenses they entail), you do not necessarily have to visit the bank to deposit and withdraw money or create an account. The Bahamas banks feature global access through automated teller cards capable of debit and credit transactions. This allows you to transact in stock trading and foreign currency exchanges. You can even have important documents couriered to your address.

To get an offshore bank account, you must apply first for an IBC or International Banking Corporation for your company. You may get help from institutions that specifically cater to this kind of need. The IBC’s are processed in Nassau, Bahamas. Your service provider facilitates the paying of processing fees, certification of the incorporation certificate, and prepares the company memorandum of association and the company articles of association. Once finished and approved, the documents that include brokerage and investment accounts are be mailed to you, as well as a list of banks that you can choose from. You do not have to go to the Bahamas to open an account. Everything can be done for you.

You can manage your offshore account much like the way you manage your onshore bank account, except that in this case, everything will be done through the Internet, mail, or phone instructions.

Costa Rica’s Cost of Living – Can I Really Live on $700 a Month?!
Jan 10th 2012, 17:23

A reoccurring question about Costa Rica from those considering moving, retiring or buying a second/vacation home in the area is, “What is the Costa Rica cost of living?”

Yes you can still live in Costa Rica for $700 a month … but it’s up to you!

Below are two monthly budgets shared by native U.S. citizens that now live in Costa Rica. These budgets where posted online via contributions to the Costa Rica Living discussion group. As you will see, there is a wide divide between what each contributor considers a comfortable lifestyle … which of course, greatly effects the final ‘cost of living’.

This is a budget for two people, living in 3 bedroom house in a mostly-safe San Jos

Nessun Internet
The Internet – Life without It
Jan 10th 2012, 17:36

For seven days this month, my Internet connection ceased to be; apparently (according to the engineer) because the cable-modem box thingy gave up the ghost. Seven whole days with no link to the outside world, except for the telephone of course, which isn’t quite the same is it? Now normally a very short period without Internet access would not cause too much of a problem; fortunately I can complete most of my work off-line so I saw this as only a minor inconvenience.

However, the big shock to my system came with the realisation that for a period of time during those days I was extremely bored. It was fine while I was working, but afterwards without the Internet to distract me, I had nothing to do for the remainder of any working day. The evenings were fine because I have a very active social life, so no problem, but it did get me thinking about how the absence of the Internet might affect the majority of us in one way or another.

Since the ‘arrival’ of the phenomenon that is known as the Internet, we have become obsessed to some extent with the speed in which it lets us live our lives. We rarely expect to get letters from friends, family or businesses – email is there, ready, waiting and fast. We can visit just about any virtual shop in the world, buy more than we could physically carry and arrange to have it delivered, and all this can be done in just an hour of surfing without even getting out of a chair.

I began to wonder about the vast number of companies whose day-to-day business is conducted online, and what would happen if for some reason the whole Internet suddenly ceased to work. The effects would be extremely far-reaching, for example; a substantial amount of daily business communication is conducted via email, the loss of which would severely disrupt and significantly slow down the companies who rely totally on this media to send and receive information where speed is of the essence. Other parties to be considered are the private individuals whose emails possibly compare or even exceed in numbers that of corporate traffic, and business websites; without these virtual showrooms to look at, a customer would have to revert back to the old way of doing things and visit a real one – very hard on the feet!

We are all aware that the rapid advances made in Internet technology over recent years have been nothing short of astonishing. From mobile phones and their ability to send messages and photo images, as well as being able to access the Internet, to email and its almost instant delivery capability. Both have transformed information exchange and communication beyond our wildest dreams, whilst simultaneously creating a mindset that has us expecting immediate answers to any questions we care to ask. It’s up to each individual to decide for themselves whether or not the Internet is for the better. I am sure there are a vast number of people in the world that prefer life the way it used to be, and their opinions must be respected.

However, to be off-line felt like some sort of isolation even though it was only temporary. It’s not something I would want to happen on a regular basis, and whilst I am sure that although we would undoubtedly cope without the Internet if we had to, the question is – would we want to?

Sure, the simplicity and speed of email would be sorely missed; the comparative ease of online shopping; the click of a mouse to pay the bills; the creature comforts that the Internet provides and what we have quickly grown to accept and expect, would eventually be forgotten or committed to a nostalgic memory, but I sincerely doubt it would be an easy transition.

We are all increasingly reliant on the Internet to make life run a bit smoother – and for me, seven days without it was more than enough to prove that.

Winterizing Your Garden
Jan 10th 2012, 18:07

When the leaves have turned color and are beginning to fall off the trees it is time to prepare your garden for winter.

Winterizing your garden is an important step to ensuring a healthy garden next year.

Start winterizing your garden by removing the dead plant remnants from this year’s garden. Dig up all of the plants, including their root systems and either remove them or pile them on top of the garden.

Ideally it is best to remove them and to put them in a compost pile. Leaving old crop debris in the garden creates a haven for rodents and insects. Also, if the plants are diseased it is important to remove them to help prevent next year’s garden from becoming diseased as well.

If you decide to leave the plant remnants in the garden leave them on top of it to dry out and till them into the soil in late fall or early spring.

Take some of the fallen leaves from the trees and till them into the garden. By tilling the fallen leaves into the soil in the fall time your garden will begin to absorb some of the nutrients associated with the leaves. Leaving them on top and waiting to spring to till them in retards the absorption of the nutrients and delays the warming of the garden soil in the spring.

Do not put fertilizer on your garden in the fall. It is bad for the environment and it is a waste of your money. Without the plants there is nothing to absorb the fertilizer. Consequently it washes away causing harm to creeks and wetlands. Save your money and apply the fertilizer in the springtime.

If you are inclined to add a chemical to your garden in the fall time, check your soils pH level and see if you should add lime or sulfur. Fall is an excellent time of the year to add these chemicals if required. Simply spread them on the soil and till them into it.

Tilling your garden in the fall time is also helpful in several other ways. Regardless if you are removing the dead plant material or not adding sulfur or lime to it, it is wise to till the garden in the fall time. Tilling the garden in the fall time helps to destroy any insect larvae in the soil. Also the thawing and freezing of the soil that occurs during the winter and spring helps to break down the dirt clogs and ensures a smoother soil for planting in the springtime.

Planting rye grass or another cover crop is also a good idea to prevent erosion and improving your garden’s soil. Simply broadcast it and rake it into the soil per the manufacturer’s recommended levels. However if you do decide to plant a cover crop, you should do it earlier in the fall season, typically before the leaves begin to fall off the trees. If you plan to plant a cover crop start the winterizing of your garden in early fall. In spring, till the cover crop over about 1-2 weeks before you plan to plant, so that the cover crop plant material has a little time to breakdown and decompose.

With these few garden winterizing tips, your garden is prepared for another great planting in the spring.

How to Train an Untrainable Dog
Jan 10th 2012, 19:15

Training dogs for over 20 years I have heard from a lot of pet owners that think they have an un-trainable pup. In all my experience I have never come across a canine that could not be trained. Here are some tips for training that “untrainable” dog of yours! Step 1: Establish leadership. Canines are social animals and respond to a social structure. The better you are at becoming the leader, the faster an untrainable dog will listen to you. Step 2: Exercise your untrainable pup. Most dogs that are very difficult to train have a lot of pent-up energy. By giving the untrainable them a lot of exercise, it will be easier for them to learn. Step 3: Once leadership and exercise have been used, it’s time to start teaching the untrainable dog obedience. The first step with obedience training is attention. Spend the majority of your time teaching attention until you can get your dog to look at you every time you say his name. Step 4: Once attention has been established you can start teaching the other basic commands: sit, stay, stand, down, come and heel. These are the basic commands that every puppy should learn. Step 5: Stick with the steps outlined in this article–and your “untrainable” dog will no longer have that undeserved title. Some people think that their pets have Canine ADHD or some other type of problem. Usually the problem is one of the steps listed above. Once you figure out which step your dog needs help with, everything will fall into place.

An Audio Book of MR POPPER’S PENGUINS by Richard and Florence Atwater – A Tale That’s Still Enjoyed
Jan 10th 2012, 22:15

Oh, where could you have been if you have not read, heard read, read about, or read to someone, MR. POPPER’S PENGUINS??? As the Newbery Medal Honor Book of 1939, MR. POPPER’S PENGUINS resonates today just as it did then. When Richard Atwater died before he finished writing this classic, his wife Florence finished it for him. Together they were honored with the prestigious award. Parents have read this to the children, teachers have taught entire themed lessons around this wonderful classic. IF for some reason you have missed this story, then you are indeed in for a treat! Mr. and Mrs. Popper live with their two children, Janie and Bill, in a town called Stillwater. Mr. Popper is a fairly good house painter but he does tend to daydream a lot about his favorite topic, Arctic explorers and the ice all around the North and the South Poles. Mrs. Popper and the children don’t always understand Mr. Popper’s daydreams, but that doesn’t seem to bother him. Mr. Popper even wrote to Admiral Drake, who is exploring the South Pole. Then one day Mr. Popper finds out that Admiral Drake read his letter and is sending him a gift. When a crate is delivered, Mr. Popper opens it and you guessed it, out hops a penguin! Mr. Popper is immediately taken with the little flightless guest and names him Captain Cook! Little Cook is cute, curious, and cunning. This description isn’t unusual as one will note there is a good bit of alliteration in the story. However, Captain Cook although he is treated well with the Poppers walking him and fixing their refrigerator for him, still gets rather down and depressed. A call to the local zoo for help brings what the doctor, or the Captain needed…a friend–a female friend named Gerta. She quickly cheers him up and as one can guess, soon the pair of penguins present Popper with presents…eggs that turn into ten happy, hoppy, healthy, house guests! BUT Mr. Popper finds that caring for his LARGE family now takes more money than he has. What to do? SPOILER ALERT! Mr. Popper presents a way for the penguins to not only bring in some money but they become celebrities as well as they are taught to perform and they “hit the road” to become stars. Unfortunately, these stars are only allowed certain places and venues so when jealous fellow performers cause problems, Mr. Popper winds up in jail for going to the wrong theater. Who comes to his rescue? You guessed it! Admiral Drake. It is then that Popper has to make a big decision…let the stars go to Hollywood or with Drake to the North Pole to have penguin families develop

Costa Rican Singles – Three Dating Sites You Can Use To Find Them
Jan 10th 2012, 23:37

The dating sites that I’ll talk about here can be used to find single people all over Costa Rica and in some other countries as well.

My favorite website would have to be LatinAmericanCupid.com. The website has a very simple but attractive design. Once inside you’ll have access to all the tools that help you find what you sign up for. Some dating sites limit your search options until you become a paying member, but not Latin American Cupid. With a free membership, you can use all the tools in the Advanced search menu to shorten the list down to the men or women who pass your initial criteria.

If you’re looking to marry a Costa Rican woman, go to Loveme.com and poke around there. That web address belongs to a company called A Foreign Affair. A Foreign Affair is a dating company that helps connect men and women living in different parts of the world. The women are mostly from Russia, Asia and Latin America.

If you can afford it, you can buy yourself a ticket to attend a singles tour held in Costa Rica. This way you can meet and mingle with dozens of Ticas in person instead of talking through the internet.

Alternatively, you can do a search for women through the website and initiate correspondence that way.

The last site that I’ll talk about is Amigos.com. You won’t be able to see too much with a free membership account, but you should be able to get a decent feel for the features and whether you want to join or not. The features are plentiful. For example, you can set up a “regular” profile, but you can also dress it up with a voice or video greeting.

When you’re not busy browsing through the personals ads, you can chat via instant messenger, participate in an active chat room, and view some of the sexiest members in the hottest member videos or photo album sections.

Drawings Van Gogh Made After Vowing Never To Paint Again Are On Exhibition in Amsterdam
Jan 10th 2012, 23:57

A new show will hit New York Metropolitan this October, entitled ‘Van Gogh draughtsman: The masterpiece’. The exhibition features over 100 drawings by the artist, some of which are series that have never been shown in their entirety before. Even though they are mostly pen and pencil drawings, viewing them you can sense they’ve been made by a painter bursting with color. Among the highlights of the show are the drawings produced at Arles where Van Gogh lived in 1888. There’s a series of landscape drawings in reed pen, studies which culminated in the so-called second Montmajour series of six large views of the countryside in Provence. The drawings, made over three months, reveal a countryside that’s shimmering from the pages even though there’s no paint involved. Van Gogh drew these when he was staying in an asylum and it is the first time that the series is on show in its entirety.. Being an artist that strongly contributed to people’s idea of agony and passion that characterizes the modern art movement of which he was an early member, this show is a must for anyone wishing to take in the experience first hand. A total of 24 out of the just over 100 prints on show were made in April and early May 1888 when Van Gogh had decided to quit painting altogether. Some of the drawings turned out almost as paintings. The art world also goes berserk over Van Gogh’s drawings because they generally highlight such distinct phases in his work and life. Later that month, he drew a special series of seven views of the Abbey of Montmajour, also on show. Van Gogh, who trained himself in the art of painting by starting out drawing landscapes, domestic scenes, people and portraits, tended to study objects intensely. He hardly ever commented on his drawings, and never gave value judgements, but it is said that he himself also agreed that although his later drawings substituted his paintings, he never blurred the line between painting and drawing. Critics say that even during his last days, the motifs of paintings and drawings were not mixed ever. Van Gogh experimented in his drawings with vantage points and the size of his paper. Each production is also said to have been made with sharply distinct ideas often illustrative of his innovative drive. The just over 100 drawings exhibited are usually kept in safe vaults, away from daylight that would destroy them. Some of the works are on loan from the Paul Getty Museum, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Staatliche Museen in Berlin, the Kunsthaus Z
