Ox Tail in Red Wine
Jan 13th 2012, 16:07

Back in October 2008 Julie and I went to the Bayview Kitchen for dinner. It is a small restaurant run by a family and it is just at the intersection of Major McKenzie Drive and Bayview Avenue in Richmond Hill. The food was superb. Only an exceptionally experienced chef can produce such delicious food.

The dish we like most is ox tail. Julie and I simply love this dish. I remember we have made ox tail in red wine several times. It is quite simple. I would like to share it with my fellow boomers. Ok, let start:

Ingredients

ox tail (beef tail) 3 pounds
red wine 2 cups
salt 1 teaspoon
onions (cut up) 2
crushed garlic 2
chopped celery 2 cups
carrots (cut up) 3
water 2 cups
ginger 5 slices
tomatoes (cut up) 5
green onion 2 stalks
red pepper 2

Method

1. wash ox tail chunks clean with cold tap water
2. put the ox tail chunks into a pot of cold water. Boil them with gingers (2 slices) green onion (2 stalks) and cooking wine (1 tablespoon) until they boil for another 10 minutes. Now the ox tail chunks are cleaned with no blood smell (taste) and ready for the third step,
3. stir fry the ox tail chunks on the wok for another 5 minutes with a tiny bit of vegetable oil only.
4. Now prepare a pot with 2 cups of red wine, 2 cups of water add on the carrots and red onions, tomatoes, red pepper and celery as well as the ox tail chunks and boil them for about 2 hours.
5. Now, the Red Wine Braised Ox Tail is done and ready to serve.

Is it simple? We would share with you more cooking. Healthy eating.

Visiting Hawaii On A Budget – Seven Tips To Use Now
Jan 13th 2012, 17:41

Hawaii is an island paradise that everyone should experience at least once. Unfortunately, because of the small size of the islands and the booming tourism, it can certainly be one of the pricier vacation destinations.

If your vacation budget is a little tight, don’t worry. You can still afford an incredible Hawaiian adventure without breaking the bank. Here are seven tips for visiting Hawaii on a budget.

1. When to Go. The first part of your money-saving Hawaiian vacation plan to tackle is the time of the year. There are definitely peak seasons to Hawaiian travel. If you choose to travel during off-peak time, you’ll avoid the crowds and can also save on airfare and other travel related expenses. Mid-April to mid-June and mid-September to mid-November are the best seasons pricewise.

Ironically, travel dips during these times even though the weather is best on the islands. This is because most people travel to Hawaii when the weather in their hometown is bad. Winter is a popular season for Hawaii travel, so if you go just winter in the fall or just after in the spring you’ll get a better deal.

2. Where to Go. You’ll also need to make a choice of the island you want to visit. Although many people make their way for Oahu or Maui, you should know that these islands generally come with the largest price tags. The Big Island of Hawaii is somewhat more commercialized than the others, but the prices are often lower. Plus, the Big Island offers all of the highlights you want to see on your Hawaiian vacation including the rain forests, deserts, volcanoes and lots of beaches.

3. Find a Discount Flight. Your Hawaiian vacation’s price tag will be largely composed of your airfare. Once you’ve decided on a time of year when you’ll go, start keeping tabs on airfare immediately. You should sign up with one or more online airline ticket sellers to be notified when there is a good price for your tickets. The earlier you book the tickets, the better.

4. Shop Hawaii Package Deals. Try to find a package deal that includes your airfare, car rental (if you need it) and your hotel. And be on the lookout for coupon codes that will take a dollar amount off your total package price, which are sometimes offered by Travelocity and other travel websites. Often these packages give you amazing savings, especially during the off-peak season. Business owners are trying to make up for the slow down in tourism during these parts of the year so they are more inclined to offer you a deal to keep their establishments booked.

5. Think outside the hotel. There may be other options that can save you from breaking your budget on a high-priced hotel. Many people have vacation homes in Hawaii that they rent out during the time when they aren’t using it. See if you can find vacation rentals by owner on Craigslist or other similar websites. If you’re flexible on where you stay, you may be able to find homes for rent for as little as $50 a night.

6. Save on attractions by purchasing a discount pass or coupon book before you go. A Go Maui card, for example, is a discount attractions pass that you can purchase beforehand and that gives you general admission to a variety of Maui attractions – from ocean adventures and tours to culture and history to beach and water fun. Or consider purchasing a Hawaii Entertainment Book. Depending on the time of year, you can get these for as little as $10. At the time of this writing, the Hawaii book offers coupons for all the islands, including restaurant coupons and hotel and travel discounts, including attractions.

7. Set up a google alert with the keywords “Hawaii Discount” and “Hawaii Coupons.” If you’ve never done this before, it’s a cinch. Just go to Google.com/alerts and enter your search terms and email address. Google will send you an email update of the latest Google results based on your keywords at the frequency that you specify. This is a really handy way to make sure you stay up-to-date on the latest travel offers, some of which expire very quickly.

With a little planning and preparation you can make your Hawaiian vacation enjoyable no matter what your budget. And if you focus on saving money on your accommodations and your airfare, you’ll have plenty left over to see lots of Hawaii attractions.

The Story of the Titanic Necklace
Jan 13th 2012, 17:45

The movie Titanic has brought forth a lovely piece of art. The jewelry or the necklace worn by Kate Winslet at the 1997 movie has become one of the most popular piece of jewelry in the world. History has proven to us that Kate Florence, a survivor of the tragedy, has that same necklace worn on her neck during the trip. The Heart of the Ocean or more appropriately known as the Titanic necklace was introduced during the film and was given as a gift. It was supposed to be a replicate of the Hope Diamond which in fact has never been brought to sea. And it was Kate Florence who had the same necklace on her while she was onboard the Titanic. It was a gift from her lover for their marriage. Her husband, Samuel Morley, unfortunately did not survive the tragedy. The necklace can now be seen on different Titanic exhibits all over the world. The 1943 version of the movie Titanic also had a blue diamond necklace but there was another version of how the story was told. The necklace was thought to be missing in the movie and was the cause of quarrel between the two lovers. There are a lot of variations to that same piece of jewelry today. Some cheaper made replicas are made as souvenirs for Titanic museums. Some try to combine the design with other well known pendants. During the filming of the movie, a London based jeweler was asked to create the piece of jewelry for about $10,000. But the real Titanic necklace costs up to $3.5 million right after the movie was released. It was then auctioned to benefit an AIDS charity and was later worn by famous singer Celine Dion. Harry Winston made a $20 million Heart of the Ocean necklace for Gloria Stuart for her to wear at the Academy Awards which continued the great tradition of the necklace. As we all know from the movie, the Heart of the Ocean necklace was not a mere piece of jewelry but it was a symbol of true and everlasting love. The necklace brought us back to how everything started.

Meeting Someone On The Internet – Is It Really Safe?
Jan 13th 2012, 20:08

Long before the days of the Internet, people had been socializing with one another, and strangers had even introduce themselves to one another using mainly what is now known as snail mail. Some of such meetings ended up in marriages. You might have done this before, and perhaps you might found out about the person you had been corresponding with via a newspaper or a magazine.

Today, many people still do the same but instead on the slower form of communication method, they now rely on the much faster way known as electronic mail or e-mail for short. There are now websites that assist their members to find new people either for basic friendship or marriage. Such sites are usually classified as Social Networking sites. One may ask the question “Is it really safe to meet someone on the Internet?”. Well, in reality, there is a risk to everything especially when dealing with strangers. This does not mean you must not use the Internet find a friend or your special someone. Just like getting to know someone via a pen-pal program of magazine or newspaper, one has to exercise caution when getting friends via the Internet. Here are some of my suggestions:

1. Always run a background check on a person before asking him or her to be your friend. I remember reading somewhere George Washington once said, “It’s better to be alone than in bad company.”. I do not mind people checking on my background. It’s better to be safe and sorry. Some sites display the IP address of the person who is signing up as a member on the online forms to deter people with bad intentions from becoming members. Some even required some form of identity to ensure the person is genuine.

2. Do not rush into it, and use only reputable sites. Avoid sites that promote illegal activities.

3. Study the profile of the person carefully, and you use your common sense to select or reject the person.

4. Always have respect for the person you have chosen as your friend. Do not write anything that may hurt his or her feelings or provoke him or her to anger. Remember he or she is also human like you are.

5. Try to get someone which share the same passion you have or is willing to support whatever you do.

6. Read the privacy statement of the site very carefully to see how the details you submitted to them are being handled.

7. Read the terms of service carefully also. Make sure they do not allow multiple usernames that enables predators to perform their mischievous acts.

Of course, this is not all to safety on getting friends via the Internet I strongly suggest you get advise from people who have experience in making friends online.

The Statue of David by Michelangelo
Jan 13th 2012, 20:07

The Statue of David was sculpted during a three year period beginning in 1501 by the artist Michelangelo. The subject of the work is the Biblical King David in the moment that he makes the decision to fight Goliath. The seventeen foot tall statue became the symbol of defending the civic liberties of the Florentine Republic, an area surrounded by more powerful states and the powerful Medici family. The sculpture originally stood outside the seat of government in Florence, the Palazzo della Signoria. Michelangelo wasn’t the original artist of the sculpture. A group of officials sought to commission a twelve sculptures based on the Old Testament to grace decorate a cathederal. The first two were completed by Donatello and Agostino di Duccio, his assistant. The buyers contacted di Duccio to create the work of David. He shaped the legs, feet and figure and began to do some drapery work before he left the projects, possibly due to the death of Donatello. Antonio Rossellino took over the sculpting product but he was essentially fired. The partially altered chunk of marble sat that way for the next twenty five years in the yard of a workshop. The block of marble became smaller due to exposure to the elements. The deterioration of their pricey investment was enough for the group of buyers to restart the process of finding an artist. Various artists were interviewed for the task, including Leonardo da Vinci, but Michelangelo was finally hired in 1501. David is thought to be preparing for battle since the body of Goliath is not included and the young man’s body is tense and ready for action. There are bulging veins in his hand and a twisting in his body. But there are those who think it shows him in the moments after his victory, when he is contemplating his victory. The statue is standing in the contrapposto pose that prevailed during the High Renaissance. His weight is shifted onto his right leg while the left is relaxed. To balance that out, his left arm is in motion (holding the rock) while his right hangs to his side. It is a very naturalistic stance. The pedestal of marble below him is treated as though it were something he just stepped up onto. His proportions aren’t as realistic. The head and upper region of the body are larger than the lower parts of the body. The hands are also disproportionately large. The proportions are defended by experts as being accurate for the original intended home of the statue, high up on a church where the body’s ratio would have looked accurate. There is some controversy surrounding the fact that the David in the statue is not circumcised when the real life king would have been. A vandal attacked the statue in 1991, damaging some of the toes on the left foot with a hammer before he was restrained. The first serious cleaning of the statue since 1843 happened in 2003 with no damage done to the statue although there were concerns by many scholars before hand.

Whether your upcoming trip to the Caribbean is a family adventure or an adults-only escape from reality, the island of St. Lucia is prepared to welcome you with open arms and a long, long list of possible itineraries. The only planning required ahead of time involves lodgings, and making one smart decision now will mean that everything else can fall easily into place. Ensure success by incorporating a vacation rental into the mix, and then sit back and see what wonderful things develop.

St. Lucia is a culturally rich, energetic, friendly isle that is blessed with incredible terrain that includes everything from stunning beaches to rainforest-covered mountains. The wildlife is colorful and abundant, the land is approachable yet mysterious, and there are boundless options for keeping oneself busy. From sports to beach lolling, horseback riding to hiking, the uncommon options keep vacationers on their toes without obscuring the possibility of achieving a deep and thorough sense of relaxation. This rare level of calm is even more likely to be reached when a vacation home is somehow involved, so pay attention.

St. Lucia has dozens of condos, beach houses and villas to choose from. By scouting them out online, it’s possible to discover the one that’s exactly right for you and your companions by using the various search tools and also by simply looking at the pictures and waiting for that “gotta have it” feeling to rise in your belly. Need a kid-friendly set up? Have a taste for modern simplicity? Would a Creole-themed decor make you smile? Anything you want or don’t want can be scoped out ahead of time so as to avoid surprises and guarantee sweet relief.

Having your own place adds an air of ownership to a vacation. Don’t worry about sticking to anyone else’s schedule or following endless rules. Rather, pretend you’re a local and live it up, coming and going as you please while enjoying the options to cook your own meals, sunbathe in your skimpiest bikini or sleep as late as you want. It’s like being at home but much better thanks to the fragrant Caribbean breeze, the rustle of palm leaves and the distant sound of the sea soothing your worries away.

St. Lucia has a way of drawing you in for the most unexpected engagements; whale watching, cricket playing, exotic dining, rainforest hiking and bike riding are just a few of the things you could soon be doing instead of what you’re doing now. Switching locales for a while and assuming the role of a happier, freer you is exactly what you need and deserve. One warning: leaving your cozy little cottage might be kind of a downer, so make sure you’ve scheduled an adequate amount of time to spend on the island in order to avoid that feeling for as long as possible. You’ll thank yourself later for extending your time off now.

Dining al fresco, soaking in a Jacuzzi, watching the sun set from your private patio and walking to a gorgeous beach from your “home” are just a few of the pleasures that could soon be in your grasp. Start perusing the St. Lucia Vacation Rentals that are available, keeping your eyes peeled for good deals and properties that speak to your restless heart, and prepare to soon pamper yourself like you know you deserve to be.
