| Recipes For Beef and Macaroni Casserole with Feta Cheese and an Orange Almond Salad Jan 9th 2012, 06:05 For an easy meal try this recipe for a Beef and Macaroni Casserole that is just a little different. With the coriander, tumeric, lemon juice, and Feta cheese this casserole will bring a refreshingly different twist to the usual ground beef macaroni casseroles. Add the Orange Almond Salad and you have an easy but delicious meal requiring little preparation time. BEEF AND MACARONI CASSEROLE WITH FETA CHEESE 12 oz pkg whole grain elbow macaroni 1 tbsp olive oil 1 med onion, peeled, finely chopped 1/4 tsp turmeric 1/4 tsp ground corriander 1/4 tsp pepper 1 lb lean ground beef 2 tbsp lemon juice 1/2 cup chopped parsley 1 cup crumbled feta cheese 2 tbsp bread crumbs 2 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cook macaroni according to package directions until just tender. Drain. Heat the oil in a non-stick pan and cook onion over low heat until softened. Stir in the spices. Crumble in the beef and cook until no longer pink. Stir in the lemon juice. Remove from heat and stir in parsley. Spray a large baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Mix with macaroni with the meat mixture and half of the feta cheese. Place mixture into prepared pan. Top with the remaining feta cheese. Sprinkle the bread crumbs and Parmesan cheese over the top. Bake 30 to 40 minutes until bubble and hot through. Six servings. Per serving: 371 calories, 28 g carbs, 29 g protein Note: The carb to protein ratio makes this dish diabetic friendly. ORANGE-ALMOND SALAD 3 cups assorted salad greens 2 navel oranges, peeled and sectioned 1/2 celery, thinly sliced 2 tbsp chopped green onion 1/4 cup cider vinegar 1/4 cup SPLENDA granulated or Equal Sugar-Lite 2 tbsp canola or olive oil 1/4 cup slivered almonds, toasted In a large salad bowl, combine greens, oranges, celery and onion. Set aside. Blend vinegar, SPLENDA or EQUAL and oil in a small mixing bowl. Using a wire whisk, whisk until smooth. Drizzle dressing over greens. Toss gently to coat. Put into individual salad bowls and sprinkle with almonds. Enjoy! | |

| Walking Costa Rica – San Jose Jan 9th 2012, 10:23 There is no better way to see the sites of a historic city than by walking. Costa Rica’s capital of San Jose is a fascinating old city with plenty of great sights within walking distance of each other. Even though this Central American city is just nine degrees north of the equator, its altitude keeps the weather pleasant almost all year round. It lives up to its description of “the city of eternal spring.” Only during September and October is the weather usually too rainy for exploring the city on foot. Take Your Time and EnjoyIf you want to just do a quick round of walking Costa Rica’s most popular sights in San Jose for photo opportunities, you could cover it in an hour. If you don’t have much time to spend in the city that may well be sufficient. But if you do have the time, use it to really enjoy the attractions. If you don’t already have your own guide, the staff at your hotel will be able to direct you to walks that will have leaders who can point out all the major sights. A Favourite Meeting PlaceThe Plaza de la Cultura is the best place to start your day’s walking. Costa Rica doesn’t have a more popular meeting place. On the south side of the plaza is the ornate Teatro Nacional. It was designed by Belgian architects, and dates back to 1897. The building has a lavish exterior of cast iron and Italian marble. The incredible night-time illumination system was designed by Alain Guilhot, who also created the lighting for the Eiffel Tower. The brilliant neo-baroque interior is stunning and if you can’t see a show at the theatre, you should try to at least have a coffee in its café. All That GlittersThe whole array of sights that you could see by walking Costa Rica from coast to coast could not outshine what awaits you in the Museo de Oro Precolombino (the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum). In this extraordinary museum beneath the Plaza de la Cultura, all that glitters really is gold. Here you can see the largest collection of pre-Columbian gold jewellery in Central America. More than 1,600 pieces of native goldsmiths’ art contain some 20,000 Troy ounces of pure gold. From this museum, continue on to the Parque Morazan. This is downtown San Jose’s largest park, and here you can see the Templo de Musica, which is the city’s official symbol. A little farther to the east is the small Parque Espana, one of San Jose’s loveliest green spaces, and a perfect place to take a break. This is the location of the National Cultural Centre. It is also just a block away from the Parque Nacional, where you will find a monument commemorating the fight against the American soldier of fortune, William Walker. Finish your walk at the Museo Nacional. Housed in a 19th century fortress, this museum is one of the best in the country and has displays of pre-Columbian artifacts, period clothing, religious art, and antique furniture. | Hawaii Government Confronting Legal Issues Related to Vacation Rentals Jan 9th 2012, 11:10 The vacation rental industry is a large part of the Hawaii economy. Not only does it play a large role in tourism, but it also is a large contibutor to state taxes due to the transient accommodations tax. Just recently with the struggles of the economy the state and counties have had a hard time enforcing policies that have been set to regulate the industry. The first issue is non conforming use of homes. This is when the homeowners attempt to rent their properties out as vacation rentals when the land use ordinance does not allow for that property to be a vacation rental. In these instances the fines can range from $50-$1000/day. Many homeowners can reach $100,000 in fines quickly. Typically if the county brings the issue to the homeowners attention and it is dealt with in a timely manner the fine will be drastically reduced up to 75%. If it is not dealt with in a timely manner then the county can enforce the maximum penalty since this non conforming use falls in the category of the homeowner doing it solely for financial gain. The second issue is homeowners attempting to rent their properties out on their own and not being fully aware of the taxes for vacation rentals. For vacation rentals not only do you have the general excise tax, but you also have the transient accommodations tax of over 8%. This tax was raised by 1% in 2009 and will be raised another percent in 2010. There are a substantial amount of owners that do not pay this tax. Another fair amount of owners were unaware of the tax increases and did not charge the guests accordingly and did not pay the state the correct amount. Failing to pay the correct taxes for a vacation rental is fraud and homeowners can potentially be imprisioned. Where the battle of legislation comes into play is that the counties would like to see the tax records from the state to see who is paying transient accommodations taxes. The counties are confident that most people do pay at least a portion of the transient accommodations taxes to avoid legal issues. If the counties could gain access to this information then they could compare the data to the land use ordinances to see who is renting their home out as a vacation rental in an area where this is not allowed. The state of Hawaii tax department can not share the information with the counties due to legislation. The two have battled for over a year now and no agreement has been met. As the economy continues to struggle the state of Hawaii is bound to see this as a greater issue in the future. Many second homeowners are doing what they feel they need to do to keep possession of their home and not lose it to foreclosure. Hopefully in the near future the counties and state can reach an agreement to help policies be enforced. | |

The Lagos also have many other prominent wholesale marketplaces including the Balogun and Idumota markets. The Nigerian National Museum, Glover Memorial Hall and the Central Mosque all are situated in the Lagos. Below are the other Nigerian Islands surrounding the Lagos. The Ikovi Island is on the eastern side of the Lagos Island and joining it by a landfill. Besides, the of Okoyi is also linked with the Victoria through a bridge carrying the major roadway over the five Cowrie Creek. The headquarters of the federal government of Nigeria and many other important public buildings such as federal secretariat complex are housed in Okoyi island. The old federal secretariat complex is now reestablished. Most Importantly, there also exist military and police barracks too. The main prison as well as the federal high court is amongst the other noticeable state offices placed in the Okoyi Island. The commercial and business activities in the Ikoyi Island are also on the rise and the number offices, shopping malls, and banks is increasing by each passing day. The Victoria Island is situated on the southern side of the Lagos Island. Victoria Island is an expensive place in the Nigeria. The real estate properties are very expensive even then a number of new luxury societies and apartments emerging everywhere in the Victoria Islands. In addition to Ikoyi, Victoria Island occupies the main portion in the suburbs of Lagos that possess many sizeable commercial and shopping areas. There is a small island across the main channel of the lagoon from Lagos Island and this is called the Iddo Island. Being placed closer to the mainland, Iddo is also an important railroad terminus. Like a peninsula, Iddo Island is now connected to the mainland. There are three bridges that join the Iddo Island to the mainland. One of major bridge is the Third Mainland Bridge that goes through highly populated suburbs through Lagos Lagoon. | |
