Investing in Agricultural Stocks
Jan 16th 2012, 09:19

The last few months in the market have been quite nerve racking. Stock prices are bouncing up and down like a basketball in a high school gym class. Dow 14,000…Dow 13,000….Dow 14,000. The 200 and 300 point wings we see every day make picking the right stock all the more important.

As we discussed earlier this week, banking stocks have been destroyed and are setting themselves up for more of the same. Energy stocks continue to rally as oil prices constantly push to new highs, and the salivating press drools more each day as we near $100 per barrel. Technology stocks which have shown considerable strength in the last few weeks, have recently suffered a slide of their own. This leaves many investors on the sidelines asking the question:

“Where is today’s growth market?”

I think I have the answer to that, but first a little background.

Commodity prices across the board are rallying. Gold is over $800 and is on its way to who knows where. Silver meanwhile has crossed $15 per ounce. All of the news seems to be about oil approaching the $100 dollar a barrel level, and natural gas futures reaching new highs. What is lost in the information overload is that the more common commodities are also reaching new highs. Corn is a mere 12% from its highs reached earlier this year.

Wheat prices are double the previous highs achieved in the last decade.

Soybeans, oats, barley….the list goes on of agricultural commodities that are reaching new 52-week or lifetime highs. Increasing demand for commodities is driving many agricultural stocks to new highs. Look at Deere & Co. (DE), a leading supplier of farm and forestry equipment throughout the world. The stock has been hitting new highs for the last few years as their business performance has been nothing short of spectacular.

So, what is driving their business? Let’s let Deere CEO Bob Lane explain:

“Farm commodity production, as an example, has been expanding across the world in recent years yet has consistently fallen short of demand.Global carryover stocks of corn and wheat are at 30-year lows in relation

to use. Consumption is being driven by a global population growing in both size and affluence, and by the increasing popularity of renewable fuels.”

Put simply, demand for commodities is growing faster than the supply of those commodities. This is causing prices to rise. When prices rise, the commodity producers – farmers – rush out to plant more crops, and create more supply. To do this they need more equipment, seed, and fertilizer. They need the products that agricultural-related companies are selling.

This demand can’t be satiated overnight. It can take several years for a previously unfarmed piece of land to produce high yields of a quality crop. As amazing as it sounds, the agricultural industry is in a period of dynamic growth. Growth which is expected to continue for a few more years at a minimum.

There are a number of companies in the agricultural industry that I like. Deere is only one example of a company benefiting from this growing market. The other major player worth mentioning is Monsanto (MON) which provides seeds and herbicides to farmers in an effort to expand their crop yields.

With the market volatility increasing, I am focusing on fundamental stories and long term growth prospects. For me, the agricultural industry, and the companies supplying to it, have a lot of growth ahead. It clearly deserves a very close look.

"Secrets of Maui" – Only a Local Would Know
Jan 16th 2012, 10:06

A lot of My readers know I am from Maui, but I have not released anything to the public on what I know about the Island and killer places to visit if you vacation there. You can separate your vacation from everyone else’s by just knowing about some spots that will take your breath away.

So you think you have been to Hawaii just because you were once on Waikiki beach or you stayed in Honolulu. I am here to tell you, you missed Hawaii. The Beauty is on some other Islands.

Most tourists want to visit the places that most people talk about. The USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, etc.. Quite sad really as over the years these places, with the exception of pearl harbor (much respect given), have become tourist traps.

You have not seen the real Hawaii until you have been to either Maui or Kauai. I will stick to Maui as I grew up there and have conquered much of the island and its surrounding waters.

Secret Spot #1 – In Hana there is a red sand beach. It has become more popular over the years, but weary tourists tend to stay away if they have heard about it as the hike to get there is a little hairy. In Downtown Hana you hang a left down toward the school and soccer field. There is an old Japanese cemetery (Its the Only one in Hana so just ask if you get lost). You will see the trail along the edge of the cemetery. Just follow it until you come to red sand beach.

The Beach has gotten a little more well known over the years but most will never see its majesty. Oh, don’t forget your mask and snorkel as there are some beautiful fish in the lagoon. Oh and don’t bother swimming outside of the natural lava barrier, Tiger Sharks are aggressive.

Would have put a pic here but you can get it on my blog.

Secret Spot #2 on Maui- JAWZ- Jawz is located past the 14 mile marker on the north end of Maui in Peahi. Its right past Haiku (575 area code) Isn’t that a trip. Anyways, in the winter time on Maui, Jawz boasts the largest waves in the world. Some topping 70 feet tall. The surfers that talent these monstrous wonders of a wave are highly skilled and its Tow in only. They use specialized boards with foot straps and then are towed into the waves on Jet ski’s. You have to hike through pineapple fields to get there, but once you there, its awesome. Don’t forget your HD Flip cam.

Stay Tuned for Secret Spot #3 and on.. I cant give it to you all at once.

Internet Banking Vs Traditional Banking
Jan 16th 2012, 10:46

How Internet Banking Works

Internet banking works much like traditional banking. The primary difference is you are accessing your account and information, making payments and reconciling statements using your computer rather than paper or the phone to complete transactions. Instead of going down to your local branch office when you bank online you can accomplish multiple tasks at once with the click of a button.

Online banking is rapidly becoming more and more popular as consumers recognize the advantages online banking has to offer. For one most banks charge fewer fees if you take advantage of their online banking services. You can also stop receiving paper statements if you like in many cases and conduct 95% of your business over the Web when you take advantage of Internet banking.

What Internet Banks Do

What to Internet Banks do? The same things traditional banks do. They hold onto our money and lend it out to others respectively. The manage loans and help us keep track of our finances. Chances are if you own a bank account at a traditional bank they offer some type of Internet banking or online services. The next time you stop into your branch office you should ask them about online banking. You may find once you start you have no desire to go back to traditional banking.

For those that have a hard time keeping track of paper statements, Internet banking is a life saver. Internet banking is also advantageous for frequent travelers that need to keep a close eye on their finances from abroad.

St Lucia Travel
St Lucia Weather – Best and Worst Months to Go
Jan 16th 2012, 10:45

St. Lucia weather attracts vacationers to this lush and beautiful Caribbean island most of the year, but there are months when it is wise to avoid visiting there.

The island is popular with cruise visitors in particular because of its parks, volcano, rain forest hikes and of course the beaches.

Like other Caribbean destinations, it has a high rate of vacation visitors from December through May, a mix of visits during the summer and a steep drop-off in September and October during the Caribbean hurricane season. The hurricane season officially runs from June 1 through November 30, but it peaks in September and October when the region typically sees the highest number of storms, hurricanes and the accompanying heavy rains.

St. Lucia weather in February to May is part of a distinct dry season while June to December is part of a rainy season.

The average high temperature is 86 degrees Fahrenheit and the average low temperature is 76 degrees year-round, according to the St. Lucia Meteorological Service. The average monthly highs and lows vary by only two degrees, making the temperatures consistent throughout the year. The peak temperature on any one day rarely exceeds 93 degrees or falls below 72 degrees.

The island is located in the northeast Trade Wind belt. Cooling winds coming from the east average 16 miles an hour. The windiest months last from January to July. Visitors during cool months should consider staying at resorts or hotels away from the eastern side of the island to have a more comfortable stay.

The island’s lush green growth is due to moderately heavy rainfall, which averages 4.6 inches a month. (The arid Aruba averages only 1.3 inches a month.) St. Lucia’s rainfall ranges from a low of 2.0 inches in February to a high of 7.8 inches in the main hurricane and tropical storm months of September and October.

St. Lucia has more rain days than the average Caribbean destination at 17 days per month. They range from a low of 12 days in April to a high of 20 or more days in July through November.

Rainfall is heaviest in the mountainous exterior and lightest along the coast.

Vacationers who want to choose the best time to visit St. Lucia would increase their chances of experiencing good weather by going in December through May and avoiding the late summer and early fall months.

Tips On Building a Raised Garden Bed
Jan 16th 2012, 11:23

Raised garden beds are a very practical addition to your home. They are easy and cheap to build and maintain, and can be used for flowers or vegetables. It is even easy to plant them and weed them. In addition to all of these positive qualities, they drain sooner and warm up faster than regular garden beds, so you can plant earlier in the season. Planting early can give you the chance at having multiple harvests of vegetables in a season. The raised garden can be either temporary or permanent, and can be a great way to enjoy yourself in your yard while adding some decoration as well. You should begin by ensuring you have all of the necessary tools an materials needed to build with. The bed can be made of rocks, concrete blocks, bricks, wood (use wood that is resistant against rotting, such as cypress). You can also use treated wood, but make sure that it does not have any harmful chemicals in it that will enter the soil and into the plants. If you

The exterior, made of green, pink, and white marble, has several elaborate doors and interesting statues. Inside, Brunelleschi’s Dome is a masterpiece of construction. Buy a ticket to climb the 463 steps to the top of the bell tower. The panoramic view of the city is amazing. Please note, is not air-conditioned on the way up, so peak summer months can get very hot, so make sure and bring water. The Baptistery of John the Baptist, from the 11th century, is one of Florence’s oldest buildings. Its exterior is made of green and white marble and has three sets of amazing bronze doors. Inside, you can see some mosaics and a marble pavement of the zodiac. Community Supported Agriculture in Utah
Jan 16th 2012, 14:50

In this age of acronyms try this one; CSA. Familiar with it? CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. Summed up, CSA’s are local farms that provide consumers with weekly shipments of produce. So if you don’t have the space, time or desire to garden but would like locally grown, fresh organic produce a CSA is an alternative to consider. People pay a fee for a share, then pick up their produce weekly during harvest season. Most CSA’s encourage folks to visit the farm.

Many farmers are willing to customize your order if you have special needs. There are some CSA farms that are branching out into things like meat, honey, eggs etc. Knowing where and how your food is grown is becoming more important to the health concerned consumer. Eating local produce just makes more sense. Purchasing a share from a CSA supports the local non-commercial farmer. When you purchase a “share” of local produce it ensures that your produce is American grown, organically grown and never sees the inside of a semi, holding area or ripening room. Your produce will taste better because it is picked at peak and delivered that day. You can be assured that you are getting all the natural goodness of homegrown and free of pesticides. Most produce (especially in the off season) in local stores isn’t even grown in this country. Studies say that produce travels an incredible 1300 miles on average. Most produce sold in stores is not grown organically, but grown with fertilizers, pesticides, hormones etc. You can avoid that contamination by joining a CSA.

The thought of having the best of that weeks harvest to present to your family without ever having to weed, that is pretty sweet. Bring the flavor of freshly grown home to your family by joining a CSA. Community supported agriculture offers an arrangement that is mutually beneficial for the consumer and farmer. Utah has a growing list of Community supported agriculture farms. From eggs, cheese, honey – even organic beef and lamb, we are fortunate to live where there is such an availability of options.
