I should have known better than to make such a comment around Fred. Women especially dramatically altered the way they dressed and presented themselves; during the evolution of an increasingly liberated society, women began to favor casual, relaxed clothing over traditional dress rules and associated formality of previous decades. Some of the most admired new trends for women in the 1950′s included button-up sweaters with simple necklines, fitted blouses, and full knee-length skirts. However, the most prevalent fashion for women during this time was dresses. Most dresses were worn casually, and were accentuated with circle skirts, halter straps, or small collars. Evening wear dresses seemed soft yet daring, coming in many pastel hues and accompanied with bold ruffles, tulle trim, and dazzling velvet bows. The fitted evening wear of this period, which was usually sleeveless or strapless, was also emphasized with sheer silk.

Growing increasingly popular, the full skirts of the 1950′s needed some sort of support in order to maximize their look. To address this problem, Nylon petticoats were created exclusively to be worn in conjunction with full skirts to create fullness. Nylon was a favorable material because of its high quality and easy care wash. This fullness it created transformed the skirt who gave nothing more than a gentle swish, into a glamorous royal-like flutter. Another significant fashion of this period is the swing coat, developed in the last 1940′s by Jacques Fath. The silhouette of the swing coat was “designed perfectly to cover full skirts, and also ideal for the post war high pregnancy rate”. Another trend in the 1950′s was the “trapeze dress: a swinging dress almost triangular in shape and designed to be worn with low shoes and bouffant hairstyles.” The trapeze dress was later modified into a shorter baby doll tent style dress, which was popular in the next decade. Perhaps one of the most classic fashion garments from the 1950′s was Christian Dior’s H-line of 1954, which consisted of a slender tunic-style suit with a slim skirt. His other popular fashions during this period were his A and Y lines. Dior has long been a dominant force in the fashion world, especially in the 1950′s. His creative and usually voluminous garments gave women a more feminine touch. Another designer, Hubert Givenchy created a Parisian style dress in 1957 which he called the Sack. The Sack began the trend of straighter-waist dresses. Initially, it developed into the “fitted darted sheath dress and later into the loose straight short shift dress.”

I only learned the value of listening when some people opened a part of their life to me not necessarily to seek advice but only to talk. In being silent while others were talking, I found out that those who say something to you do not necessarily ask for an advice but only to pour out something that they cannot anymore bear, that they only want an attentive ear, and after that nothing else more. I found out that listening to my students and clientele as well as to the people in my apostolate area broaden my self-knowledge and confidence simply because the more I listen to them; the more I became aware of my own needs of a listening ear. The more I listen to them, the more I become human.

It is only in listening that I learned to listen to what my students and clientele is not saying; truths that are not manifested in mere words but what they actually are saying, a reality that I often neglect because I concentrate too much on what they verbally expresses. I learned to explore the world of the person talking to me through the realities that they express. In reflection, I can vividly see myself in their shoes, and experiencing the reality that they feel for the moment. Of course, I have to suspend all of my biases and the so-called messianic complex, so that the other could express well.

When I listen to one of the parishioners in our apostolate area, I learned so many things not from the words that she was saying but what was actually happening deep inside her. I hate to see people cry in front of me, but I found out that I have the capacity to listen well if I am only to remove those preoccupations as well as the stereotyping that has been my habit before. In a larger sense, I learned a bit of lesson on what it is to be human from the perspective of the expressing other, the more I listen with an attentive ear; the more I learned to love the person talking next to me, since the more they discloses themselves, the more I become a part of them and they are part of me. Perhaps I did not realize this because I found listening to other people so corny, especially when they start to cry. For me, crying while disclosing oneself was just nothing but too dramatic for a person and I often thought that it is too dramatic.

Leaders of modern thought assert that our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual bodies-which are at the root of behaviors, perceptions, reactions, habits, symptoms, and more-provide concise and exquisite communications from our subconscious aspects. They inform us, whether by a whisper or a scream, of the needs required by our consciousness and existence for survival and growth, and give indications of how and where we have strayed from the path of our soul.

When we become aware of these signals it is because we are experiencing stress, illness, disease, and dysfunctional conditions in our relationships and in other areas of our lives. At the base of these symptoms lies a misalignment with reality; something in our relationship with truth has gone awry.

Let’s look at some of the fundamental issues that are frequently uncovered in my research and with my clients. I categorize them as falling into one of the following categories: Fear Based, Semantics Confusion, and Under-developed Philosophy.

Undeveloped Philosophy Without purposeful attention towards a personal philosophy, it is likely that there will be intrinsic flaws that will eventually cause blocks, self-destruction, senseless patterns, illness, or worse. Here are a few “snafus” that regularly occur:

Contradictions:

• A contradiction cannot exist in nature. So if you are holding two beliefs-and they don’t fit together perfectly like two matching pieces of a jigsaw puzzle-then one (or both) belief is not aligned with reality.

• Holding to a “fact” that is not in alignment with the rest of your philosophy or knowledge of reality requires that you shrink your consciousness, build a wall, or create a division in your relationship with reality.

In modern Western Civilization, we have become, for the most part, accustomed to war being a serious but far away event. Although personal violence comes into our life from time to time, it is mostly on the television news. It has not always been this way. People have been forced to defend themselves, their homes, and their families from deadly personal attack since the time we all lived in caves and dressed in animal furs. The history of martial arts begins there. It begins when the man had to be able to fight to defend himself or lose his life to a stronger and better fighter.

The story of martial arts begins with the development of a warrior tradition in human development. Methods of self defense were developed using weapons when they were available and bare hands and feet when they were not. Once these skills were learned, they were passed on from generation to generation. The clans that learned them well and perfected them the fastest were the ones that survived.

Many of these early forms of martial arts were transformed as weapons began to improve. Wooden clubs were replaced with swords, and slings were replaced with crossbows. The techniques of martial arts became the techniques of warfare. One of the earliest events in the development of martial arts as a spiritual practice was the writings of a man named Bodhidarma who lived around 550 A.D. He was credited with associating the unarmed martial arts of the time with the meditative practices of Zen Buddhism. He is also said to have influenced the Shaolin priests of China. The Shaolins were later introduced to popular culture through the television show, Kung Fu.

Over the years, many of the Asian martial arts disciplines were formalized through a system of teacher and learner. The teacher was the experienced Master who passed on the knowledge of the arts to his students. Some of the forms became highly stylized with tests being administered to pass to a higher rank, but others remained rooted in the teacher/student method. Experience was the important thing and training.

Today we live in a rapidly changing global society, one in which we the need for adaptability is highly necessary. The information age of research, reasoning and effective communication has begun; the industrial age of repetitive machinery has passed. As such, the liberal arts and sciences, which most colleges are, do not train for specific jobs, contrary to popular opinion. Instead, they give you the versatile skills that are valuable for numerous careers, with majors simply merging those skills with technical ability. Philosophy majors, unlike other majors, do not merge skills the same way. They specialize in learning those versatile skills in-depth, which result in them being in numerous career paths.

Now would it not be better to have the versatile skills demanded today merged with the practical, technical skills? Only if you do not plan to advance your career as fast or as far. By spending time merging skills, you do not spend as much time upon the versatile skills as necessary. The only way to effectually merge skills would be to have a double major with philosophy included. However, many students do not have the time or ability to have a double major. Therefore, that leaves us with the philosophy major.

What proof do I have that the philosophy major is better? Well, let us look at how philosophy majors do on tests after the undergraduate experience. First, let us look at the LSAT (Law School Admissions Test); According to the University of Virginia’s Office of Career Planning and Placement’s report, A Comparative Study by Major of Law School Admission Test Performance, the average LSAT score for a philosophy major was 15 points higher than the average for any other major. Next, the American Medical Association reported that in a study they had conducted, they found that philosophy majors had the third highest acceptance rate into American medical schools. York University discovered that on the Graduate Record Examination, the test necessary for admission into a master’s degree program, philosophy majors performed an average of 5% better than the average; on the verbal section, they scored higher than all other majors, including English; on the quantitative section, where humanities usually do deficiently, philosophy majors performed higher than other humanities, with the exception of economics.

Three infants became asphyxiated when the drop-side or mattress support hardware failed creating a space where the babies became wedged. The fittings supporting either the mattress or drop-side were broken or missing. In one of these cases sited in Virginia, two screws were missing allowing the drop-side to detach from the headboard and create a space where the infant was entrapped.

In 20 other reports where the drop-side became detached and children experienced bruising when they became entrapped or even falling out of their crib. One child received a broken arm as a result of the fall. This hardware appears to be identical to that used on the Generation 2 Worldwide ChildE SIGNS brand drop-side cribs recalled in February 2010.

A similar suffocation space has been created when mattress support fittings have failed or come loose causing the mattress to drop. While these situations are less common, the potential for injury or death is just as great. Parents and caregivers should stop using these cribs immediately and replace them with safe cribs. Do Not Attempt to Repair These Cribs! No matter what the brand or model, parents should periodically tighten screws and other attachment hardware to ensure that crib parts are in good condition and solidly attached.

Family and Friends, what I call the “Two Fs” are life’s greatest treasures. Never lose sight of them.
A friend once lost his job. I still remember the day when I picked him up from work and drove him back home. His wife was upset, but did not show it. Instead, she made us a nice cup of tea. The kids were really happy to see their dad home early. They had no clue that their father did not have a job now. The following 6 months were excruciating, living on savings, feeling hopeless, depressed and lost. The job was gone, so was the car, the gym membership and a list of other trivial things. Only two things remained unchanged – Family and Friends. With their support and encouragement, he got another job within 6 months. Today, the car is back, so is the gym membership, but the bonding with the “2Fs” has grown even stronger. No matter what is lost, family and friends should and will last forever.

Make time for your family and friends. You will never regret it. When I was a ‘corporate high flyer’, I remember numerous occasions when I returned home really late from work. The kids would be waiting patiently for daddy to tell them a story. Sadly, daddy would never be in a mood and would often lose his temper with the poor things. Looking back, I can’t get to forgive myself and I know a lot more people out there who feel like me.

Few tips that have helped me bond better with family and friends:
Consciously make time to spend with family and friends. Set aside an additional half hour every day, just to sit with the family and do something everybody likes (TV, a chat or a board game). Make sure you have at least one meal together. I make sure that the family always has dinner together. Wake up with a smile. It radiates down to the whole family. Never set your expectations too high and don’t ever forget to appreciate your family and friends for something good that they have done.

I know it mind sound counter intuitive at first but remember that what you do only matters in the short run. Everything that you do has consequences and all of the outcomes that might happen to you down the road are closely related to your actions now. Even the smallest thing that you do right now will change something in the near future. The end result is a snowball effect of all these tiny actions, just like multiple snowflakes which eventually create a snowman. That is why you should really focus on your actions now.

Many people tend to either live in the past or the future but are absent in the moment. That is very dangerous as your present will become past in the next day, and your next day is the future of the day you are living in now. The only way to change your future is to act now, and for your past to become better the same has to be done. This is such a simple concept but for some reason numerous individuals never seem to grasp it. They are always day dreaming or imagining what things will be like but it never happens. Right now is where the action is and unless you are taking massive amounts of it both your future and past will become much less desirable.

In martial arts it is taught that you very next move will decide the course of the battle. Whether you chose to punch or block has an immediate outcome on the next move. These moves follow each other in a sequence which either leads the person to win or lose the battle. This works with our lives as well, as all of the small steps or actions that you are taking right now are a sequence which will have a certain outcome. It is important to have a plan for that outcome otherwise it will be chosen for you. That is what separates the losers from the winners, it is a plan and the action taken each day. Even though you might like to think it is luck but it really is as simple as that.

The highest form is not necessarily an actual style or sect. First, there are two sides to the coin. One: the physical embodiment of the highest form; and two: the mental. This article deals with the physical.

If it had to be labeled to one style of combat arts, I would say internal arts are representative of the physical side of the highest form. Bear In mind that the highest form of martial arts has nothing to do with how effective you are in a fight. It has to do with efficiency and subtleness overall.

More specifically I would point to Chinese Taiji quan and Bagua. These are beautiful and elegant arts. And with the right teacher, you can use them to effectively defend themselves provided you have “hard” style training to add it to.

So here it is: the highest form of martial arts is the subtle efficiency one has gained through mastery of technique and ultimately one’s self through training and the unification of mind and body. Internal power generation methods are the greatest example of this in actual combat application. Not the chi ball kind; the physical kind. The looseness, the full body movement, the intricate control. All of that is an example of internal power. Applicable to real world seld defense or not, these techniques take so much skill and practice, they are their own achievements in themselves. (The power generated by some of these strikes is called “jing” or “fa jing” in Chinese martial arts circles.)
