Homemade Organic Fertilizer – Tips on How to Make It
Jan 21st 2012, 03:10

Did you know that homemade organic fertilizer is healthier and cheaper? Here are a few tips and a recipe for making your own fertilizer and growing nutritious, delicious fruits and vegetables. For optimal results, treat your garden with a homemade fertilizer and compost. The two together make for excellent results and have been repeatedly successful. The most important ingredients are bone meal, kelp meal, seed meal and various kinds of lime. It’s important when you’re making the fertilizer to measure by volume, not by weight. Meaning, by using measuring cups or a yogurt cup instead of using pounds. It doesn’t have to be exact measurements. The proportions can be off by approximately 10 percent and still produce great results. Recipe: 4 parts seed meal 1/2 part ordinary agricultural lime 1/2 part gypsum 1/2 part dolomitic lime For best results you can add: 1 part bone meal or 1 part kelp meal Buying your ingredients in bulk, by mail order or online will often give you the most materials for your money. If you find a good source, then go ahead and stock up once or twice a year. Garden shops, like Gardens Alive! generally sell ingredients in smaller, manageable quantities. You can evenly spread 4 to 6 quarts for every 50 feet in a row that is up to 12 to 18 inches before planting each crop. Work the fertilizer into the soil with a hoe or spade. For more demanding vegetables, such as tomatoes, sprinkle small quantities every few weeks around the plant after the original application. If you want to buy in bulk and think you will have extra, then premix in a plastic garbage can or plastic tote so that you can safely store it for next time. Happy Gardening!

Travel Go Stuff Florence
Michelangelo’s The Four Captives
Jan 21st 2012, 04:30

The Accademia di Belle Arti Firenze, also known as Academy of Beautiful Art of Florence, was historically known as ‘a school of art.’ Students have studied art at this academy since the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Pietro Leopold, collected numerous schools under one roof in 1784. The roots of the academy date back further to the Academy of Art Design, founded in 1561. Yet, for the holidaymaker and other visitors, it’s the numerous art galleries that attract attention. There’s extensive works of art, with paintings ranging from the years 1200s through the 1500s. Not the least of these are 24 panels by Taddeo Gaddi that exhibit scenes from the life of Jesus. The Gallery houses works by Uccello, Ghirlandaio, del Sarto and Botticelli as well. Spectacular paintings by Lo Scheggia, continues to attract a wide audience as well as providing fine art students with old masters to emulate. His work named Cassone Adimari that he painted in the 1440s has the admiration of many. Nonetheless, unquestionably the works on exhibit that attract the largest groups of holidaymakers is Michelangelo’s – David and a collection of sculptures qnd busts, and in particular. At the far end of the gallery’s left wing is a 19th century exhibit and one wall that is decorated with plaster casts, historic busts, and sculptures. The gallery provides fine art students with numerous archetypes to emulate, and the gallery is of interest to art lovers who might only look, but cannot create. The best part here is the unique ‘plaster’ of the work; Rape of the Sabine Women done by Giambologna. The original finished marble piece is in the Loggia dei Lanzi. Further along the main hallway guests will encounter quite a few still unfinished art works created by the great master, Michelangelo and his ‘The Four Captives’ (or Slaves) that is unfinished. Art scholars have debated whether they’re unfinished or intentionally left, with only certain features defined. However, admirers of the art of sculpture will just gaze in awe at what even a partial work, those genius fingers could fashion. This provides a glimpse into the working techniques of one of the greatest artists in history. At the far end of the hallway on a custom-built stage, it was called the tribune: ‘Thee David.’ finished in 1504, it was completed by an artist less than thirty years old. The sculpture by Michelangelo found had made the most celebrated piece of three diminutional art in the world from a 16-foot piece of discarded stone. In recent history, “Thee David” survived an attacked in 1991, by a disturbed person with a hammer. David’s toes became harmed and now the statue resideds behind a Plexiglas barrier. Nonetheless, guests to the gallery can still view the monument. One can almost feel the warmth from a living being as the David stands in a relaxed but alert pose, ready for battle. There is always a crowd in front of the Plexiglas barrier so be prepared to jostle your way through the throng. Even though Davis originally resided at the Piazza del Signoria in 1873 for four hundred years in the sun and air, it is still the undisputed pinnacle of art in a city filled with outstanding works of art. They have placed a copy of David at the Piazza del Signoria where once the original was.

Nessun Dormas Dog Training
How Dog Socialization Can Help a Problematic Dog
Jan 21st 2012, 04:27

The breed of dogs is widely known to have different behavior or attitude and this is due to their strong genetic characteristics of their breed. Like for example the sheepdogs that guard and lead sheep are born with the capability to herd or guard livestock and the gundogs that have the natural acceptance of being able to take some loud noise like the gun shots. But other dogs cannot do these things and it really depends upon the breed of the dogs. Some dogs are hard to train for their dog socialization but others are easily trained to be friendly. However, if you will allow your dog to be trained at the dog training schools or clinics it will be possible. Critical Period The most critical time of canine socialization is the time when a particular pattern or set of behavior must be presented or performed to the developing canine (the puppy) in order that such behavior will be manifested in the dog when it will get older. Its inability to do or initiate such behavior training at the critical period may result in the distortion of some hereditary behavior into that particular breed of canine. The critical period of dogs varies and is not the same for all different breed of dogs. But in general its critical time for their socialization is between 2 weeks into 16 weeks. And if the canine is not properly socialized in the right manner that particular dog will never have the appropriate behavior in the future. Imprinting properly The significant factor of the critical period of the dog socialization is known as imprinting. This is the method wherein a young dog or animal gets the self identity as the specie or imprinting is the process in which the socialization period when such puppy will associate itself along the particular breed. Usually the dog or animal will surely associate itself with its own particular breed or species. But there are a few cases wherein the dog will have to get the characteristics of another breed or specie which are only rare. There are also cases wherein the manipulated or artificial characteristics flourish over the domesticated dogs or animals. Imprinting Manipulated in Dogs That only means that if you left a puppy at the sheep fold it will eat and stay within the fold of many sheep that it will be like the sheep over the period of time. After some time the canine that sleeps, eats and plays with the sheep will associate itself with the sheep and not as canine or as people too. This means that contact and dog socialization with other animals will certainly play a very important role in molding the behavior of that particular canine. So it is best if your canine has some dog to play and live with, in your house. Dogs will always love to have some dogs as their playmates and loves to have their owners too. And this must be the case with your canine to be properly socialized.

Flower Tips – How to Take Care of Orchids
Jan 21st 2012, 05:44

As a beginner, in order to grow and properly care for your orchid, there are some basics you will need to keep in mind. These relate to selecting the right orchid, potting media, water, light, humidity, temperature as well as fertilizer. Orchid selection Orchid growing is not difficult once you find an orchid species that is easy to grow. Select orchid species such as the phalaenopsis and the paphiopedilums which tend to thrive in a home environment, thereby making them ideal for beginners. Before parting with your money at the orchid store, check to see that the orchid plant is proportionate to the pot and its roots are in the potting media. The leaves of the plant should be light green and without blemishes, preferably with some unopened buds. The orchid should also be pest-free and without fungal spotting. Potting media Avoid planting your orchids in regular potting soil as this will kill them. It is important to note that in the wild, orchids grow by attaching themselves onto structures such as trees and rocks. As such, when growing them at home, you should ensure that your potting media permits the easy draining of water which will ensure that your orchid roots are able to breathe. Ideal potting media included tree bark, fern, wood chips, moss and charcoal. Light Too much or too little exposure to light could damage and impair the growth of your orchid. One way to check for proper light exposure is by observing the orchid leaves. Healthy leaves should have a light green coloration, while an underexposed leaf will have dark green coloration. On the other hand, an overexposed orchid will have yellow/red/brown coloration on their leaves. Water As a general rule, you need to water your orchid once a week or every five days during the warm seasons. Too much watering may lead to the rotting of the roots. When not sure, you should under-water, rather than over-water your orchids. Temperature The ideal daytime temperature for orchid growing is approximately 70 degrees Fahrenheit, while a nighttime temperature of 60 degrees will do. In order to facilitate proper blooming of your orchids, always ensure that they are never exposed to a nocturnal temperature drop of around 10 degrees. Humidity In order to remain healthy, your orchid will require at least a 50% level of humidity. If you reside in a low humidity area, you may use a humidity tray to ensure that your plant receives enough water from the air around it. A humidity tray is positioned under the orchid and contains water which will evaporate and rise, thereby increasing the levels of humidity in the room. Fertilizer Growing orchids require regular use of fertilizers in order to provide the plants with enough nutrients for growth. If your potting media is tree bark, you should get a high nitrogen content fertilizer as the bacteria in the bark will be competing with your orchid for nutrients. Preferably, you should use a fertilizer brand that contains 20% nitrogen, 20% phosphorous and 20% potassium.
